man ya naw

once you slow down to the semi tropical work rate things happen

today for instance, is the first day of class in a new school that i am starting with a friend whose nephew was a student of mine at an established school....

they stole from me

i wrote it out.. TLDR ALERT

Mexican interludes-

My illegal work at The Language School was complicated by the fact that the accountant was not at the meeting. The program directors office was just large enough for the owner, her daughter and myself. I had been in Mexico for a month at that time. My Aunt thought a job would be just the thing for me. They claim to love Native Speakers at the Language School. To be sure that I was fully compensated for my efforts I made a joke with the owner of the school about being an illegal worker. I said that “surely, since the undocumented workers in the States do not chip in for drones, that I certainly wouldn't have to pay for the bullets that they were using to kill student teachers.” I moved to Mexico shortly after 43 student teacher candidates were gunned down in Oaxxco. It seemed like the time was right for me to get back in the game. I repeated the joke to make sure that everyone in the room heard it, and would remember. The accountant wasn't there. That became a problem when I was eventually paid 800 pesos less than I should have been. When I asked her about the shortfall, the accountant said it was for taxes and seemed mad about the extra work of printing out several extra paychecks that I would then sign back over to the school, when I was legal.

I went to the program director, a dude who often smells like he's been smoking pot. Unsurprisingly, he didn't remember the details of the meeting. Short term memory loss is a characteristic of the hop-head. He doesn't like to handle the money because the savage, unsmiling secretary and the thief accountant gang up on him and yell at him when he makes mistakes. They call him names and laugh at his accent and poor vocabulary. He's been emasculated. Looking back, I think that he has found a very clever way to do less work. When the secretary leaves for the day, no more money is collected. People literally wave money at him and he doesn't take it, telling them to come back during the workday, when the secretary is there. I may write a chapter about him in the Mexican version of Boss Management Systems(BMS).

Because money and memory are not things he is good at, he was less than helpful when I pressed to get the money I was owed. I was broke. My nest egg was gone and I very dramatically pressed my case by emptying all of my remaining coins on the front deak, noting that I had been working for two months and rent was due. So he lent me some money so we would not have to fight, which was good. (Also from BMS, do not fight the boss 1500 miles from home.) His job is to be a buffer between the owners of the school and the teachers and sell classes. He is good at not knowing the exact answers and delaying and due to the fact that the owner of the company spends half of her time traveling overseas, stuff usually works itself out on its own. To keep the peace the first time he lent me rent money. Now he was forgiving some of loan, but I feel bad that that's money he won't be able to spend on his kid. It was easier this way for him not to be stuck between my strong personality and the accountants. Pothead reasoning. Don't get me wrong, I love them. I lived with them for most of my life. I almost was one. You just have to know what their strengths are. Deal with their percieived reality to ensure your own good outcome. I think that's why he left the Coast Guard and lammed it to Mexico. Something about a bale.

So later, when it became obvious that the check thing was not going to happen, I approached the accountant again, this time talking about my rate of taxation and the amount of “taxes” that were taken out. The figures did not match. She took out 15% and the tax rate seemed to be about 3% for my now legal situation. I was certainly due a refund or even better, the whole 800, since I had an oral agreement with the owner of the school about not being taxed for illegal work. A conversation that I cleverly sent to her on facebook to have a electronic paper trail. She said something about some papers I signed in Spanish and I reminded her that I did not read Spanish. The papers she was referring to were described a personal loan. What she didn't know was that the secretary had also given me a receipt for “servicios professionales” when I was paid the first installment. The one for professional services is the proof that I was paid to work illegally, but I did not want to get the secretary in trouble. She was just doing her job. She wasn't in on the rob the gringo scam. It was beginning to be clear just why the “loved” their native speakers at the Language School. We are easy to steal from.

An old lady who supervised with the accountant in a now closed branch of the school told me in confidence that she had caught the accountant stealing when she was the boss. The owner didn't do anything about it, according to this woman, because of “all the trouble” the accountant would start if she were fired. With twenty years of controlling all the accounts and paying out the lawsuits, she knows all the dirty details. Which is why her mother recieves a bi-monthly check bigger than most teacher's do. The accountant is at the top of her pay scale and would get killed in taxes with a raise, so instead of paying the government, they pay her mother, who has never set a foot inside of the building.

The program director is famous for saying that I should not use US standards when judging the way they do business in this country. That it is a completely different world, and I agree. The minimum daily wage for the City of Merida is 72 pesos a day with breakfast and lunch provided and the highway to the Capitol city is full of pickup trucks with 10-18 day workers standing in the back. A kilo of oatmeal is 18 pesos, eggs are carton of 30 for 39 pesos or so. It is an intersting place to try to pay rent, but somehow I manage. I was surprised to be teaching again after so many years, but an even bigger surprise would come later when I took another job I never imagined that I would be doing again.

a day long body high with slight visuals... i love this place...three more servings left.....

every three days or so i cook something up...pancakes, oatmeal...green eggs tree spinach and extra ingredient....

50 pesos equals five servings here in the jungle....

about two fiddy.... fifty cents for a day long happy buzz thing is pretty sweet if you ask me..my rent is about 35 bucks a month...i think ill start a jungle poker school for horses

5 hours from cancun though... less gringoes here...

my weed guy ripped a joint out of the sack when he delivered it..his buddy was yelling at the family an hour later.... so he's a local and it took the back of his brain away from him...maybe its got a secret ingredient....or is a super strong hybrid
