Mini-WCOOP and the fact that we're not running 2nd Chance tournaments for this year's WCOOP are not related at all.
The decision to stop running 2nd Chance tournaments was made based on the fact that we've been considering stopping the 2nd Chance tournaments for quite some time as WCOOP has grown, and the time to do so has now come, based on how the 2nd Chance tournaments have affected WCOOP over the years, independent of Mini-WCOOP.
Initially, the 2nd Chance tournaments were offered at least in part due to the fact that WCOOP late registration stopped as soon as someone was eliminated in each Event. Once that stopped being the case (once we had proper late registration, in other words), we should have considered stopping the 2nd Chance tournaments then, but we didn't.
Over the past few years, the 2nd Chance tournaments have grown to the point that they make up a major portion of the overall spending throughout WCOOP. As the series continues to grow, by this point to 82 Events, the 2nd Chance tournaments have become for some an alternative to WCOOP proper, which has never been the intention of those tournaments. With extended late registration, re-entries, etc... there is no longer any need for the 2nd Chance tournaments and so they have finally, after years of consideration of taking this action, been eliminated. This is along the same lines as the reason that I answered the request to label main schedule tournaments with 'WCOOP Special' throughout WCOOP as it being something that we almost certainly won't be doing, as branding non-WCOOP Events with WCOOP branding will draw attention away from the Events themselves, which is not anything that we want to do as doing so would draw liquidity away from WCOOP.
While I completely understand that those who grind as many high-stakes tournaments as they can want as many opportunities to play high-stakes tournaments as possible, and therefore want as much attention drawn to them as possible, the fact is that the players' bankrolls aren't infinite. For the duration of WCOOP, the best thing is to have the WCOOP-branded attention on the WCOOP Events and the WCOOP satellites. Re-adding the 2nd Chance tournaments or adding WCOOP branding on to non-WCOOP tournaments would detract from the WCOOP Events, and that would be bad for the series. Painting Mini-WCOOP orange won't have the same effect, as the buy-ins are significantly low enough that they won't affect the series, and that's also why Mini-WCOOP will stay where it is, with the buy-ins at $1-$11, with the exception of the Mini-WCOOP Main Event. Again, I understand that not everyone will understand or appreciate that these settings are the way that they are, but we know what we're doing here, and these settings aren't changing.
