They leave money for 1st so that people keep playing properly after the deal. Wouldn't make for very interesting replays if people stopped giving a **** after chopping.

^ That's fair enough, but the question is how much money still needs to be in play for $11 MTT players to continue to take it seriously. $3K would be fine.

Yes.
There was a tourney on stars where they were discussing a deal HU and the chipleader agreed to an amount lower than his opponent. The host asked if he was sure, then when he confirmed asked him "are you aware the chipleader usually gets the largest payout in a deal?", the guy said yes. the host stalled the game more and eventually involved another host to explain the situation in russian, the chipleaders native language.
Can't remember which one it was, but it was some special event small stakes buyin huge guarantee iirc.

I think it's in the interest of fairness of a host to step in and say something in a case like that, and also in this case.

I think that was the MM main last year when the two settled on Skype or something because it was a huge amount left to play for first.

They both agreed a nonsensical deal but chopped it "fairly" anyway away from the table.
