Re: Shaniac: The Corner
As I read this thread I'm thinking to myself, I need to be more focused and stop messing around on my 2nd monitor while I play poker since Shaniac always talks about being focused.
Meanwhile I see Shaniac posting in his well while deep in the $100 rebuy. Sick life!!

TY, sentiment is mutual from my end.

(A) Do you have a favorite exotic hand of poker you've ever played? (Maybe a highly coordinated board in a very unusual strategic spot, or one of those hands where six guys fold out of turn to try to beat the line for the urinals at break, or the dealer accidentally exposes 14 cards, or...)
|
I can only vaguely remember some hands that fit the bill from Playstation era, but I don't remember the details well enough to do them justice. Been a long day, if I think of anything I'll get back to it.
This doesn't quite fit the bill of "exotic" but it was memorable: PLO hand from Playstation.

(B) Have you ever read David Foster Wallace?

Have not, but I read the New Yorker profile on him.

(C) What do you miss most about the way poker was in 2005? (Besides the lower skill of your opponents, that is.)
|
Well, I guess the sheer newness of it, the freshness. Not surprisingly, some of my (and probably many of our) strongest bonds in the poker world were formed that year.
That first trip I took to PCA in 2005 (I failed to win a satellite, but hit a score in Party Super right before and sold off action to get in) was really eye-opening in terms of seeing what young guys had already accomplished in the poker world. And wow, when I think about, I'm actually still good friends with quite a few people I met that trip. (Similar with that year's WSOP).

(D) A serious player, better than average but not one of the best, wants to take a trip to exactly one European tournament with his fiancée. Which is the best choice?
|
In a vacuum (like not knowing your fiancee), it would be Monte Carlo as a lock, and hopefully future Grand Finals are held somewhere similarly cool if not the same spot. WPT Paris, because everyone loves Paris, but stay anywhere besides Champs Elysee I think. Deuaville. I'm a Francophile I guess? Also, I haven't been to a lot of Euro spots, so it's not a comprehensive comparison.

Re: Shaniac: The Corner
Shane: I sat on your left Day 2B of WSOP-ME 2009. Another day at the office for you, but a big moment for an old amateur player like me. You were a pleasant table-mate (for as long as I lasted). I'm glad to have come across this thread.
Question: A player has three-years of very nice stats at the local club -- mostly $100 buy-in, some at up to $500. He plays an extremely tight/extremely aggressive game. He is constantly kidded about how few hands he plays -- by the same guys who then donk off their stacks to his nut hands. If he were to move up a level, say at A/C or Foxwoods, what changes and challenges should he look forward to -- and look out for?
I hope that's not too dopey a question. Thanks. I'm really pleased to read that you are doing well.

Re: Shaniac: The Corner
Like I said earlier when we were at same table, very excellent well. Appreciate you putting so much effort keeping up with it. I can't ever think of questions for these rly.
If you have traveled a lot, I would enjoy suggestions on places to visit around the world. Do you have any? Also, do you remember a poster named guapopotamus by any chance?
Great well, have a good night.

Re: Shaniac: The Corner
Nice well, thanks for doing this.
I'll drop a few questions, hope they haven't been asked yet.
1. What would you say are the major things that hold back solid winning midstakes players (20-60 range, 109 stars freezes, etc) from advancing to the next level in their poker progression?
2. Referring to lower stakes again, what kind of advice would you give to someone on game selection on stars since the fields are absolutely massive in the midstakes range? Basically do you think a key idea would be to construct a schedule around smaller field tournaments to reduce the variance of an average field size of 2000-3000 since so much luck is involved to FT a field size that large or is that opportunity for a massive score simply too good to pass up (i.e. 3r or basically any of those with 3000+ runners)? Better to save that screen real estate for something else? (hope this question made sense)
Thanks.

Re: Shaniac: The Corner
Hey Shane, just wanted to come in and say great well and that I've always enjoyed your blog and think you're an awesome dude, and congrats on the deal!
Just one random question b/c so much has been covered ITT
How much non-holdem do you play these days, and do you feel like it's important to be a well rounded player? Also if you do play, how do you feel about their relative softness in comparison to NLHE?

Re: Shaniac: The Corner
Shane, Congrats on your big win last night and your new deal with Stars. You appear to be a really classy guy and Stars is lucky to have you.
At what age did you take up tennis? Who are your favorite players, male and female? Have you played with either Gus or Patrik? If so, are they as good as I have heard?
As some others have mentioned, I first heard of you from reading Peter Alson's book. What is he up to now? Is he still able to make it out to Vegas for the WSOP every year now that he has a family?

Was there a deal in that $100 Rebuy last night. I noticed everyone was sitting out for a while but I didn't see any chat.

Re: Shaniac: The Corner
Great thread.
One of favourite poker memories was the day we played together along with Isabelle Mercier in Monte Carlo.
Somewhat surprised (and pleased) you are not totally against having kids. You certainly eyed my offspring with suspicion when you met him!
Questions:
1. Do you play poker as end in itself or a means to an ends?
2. If you won the WSOP main event, how much poker would you play afterwards?
3. Which city would you like to visit which you haven't been to yet?
4. Since I've been following you on twitter you seem to have busted 3 times with A7. Time to find a new signature hand? And what is the story behind it being your hand?
Congrats on your appointment with Team Online, trust it brings everything you hope for.

Re: Shaniac: The Corner
Have you ever tried GBL/GHB (either recreationally or as a sleep aid), if so, thoughts?
What's your idea of a fun night out? Do you go 'clubbing'?
What's your opinion of the character Hank from Californiacation? Would you swap shoes with him, given his flaws?
(lame questions, but for someone reason they tickle my curiosity).

Pretty sure I remember you from that ME, TY, and the question is probably less dopey than my answer, because I don't really have one...
If you do well in local east coast clubs, I think you can do similarly well in lowish stakes east coast casino events. That's about the best I can think of. The last time I played a <1K in AC/Foxwoods might be 5+ years, so I have no idea what to expect in those fields.
GL!
