Shane, congrats. You're 1 of like 1 blogs I read on a regular basis. For some reason, this song reminds me of you, though we've never met. Weird.
Best of luck in the coming years.
In regards to the smoking thing, have you considered what I do? I don't smoke regularly per se, but I never say that I will never have another smoke ever because i do think there are great times and places for them and like you said they are one of life's great simple pleasures sometimes. I just find it really easy to not smoke when I know I can smoke after I have a few beers and I feel like a smoke, or whatever the case may be.
I made this a while back for some thread. I forget what.

Re: Shaniac: The Corner
One time I made a Flashdance ref to Shane during a 180 and he did not seem to get it. The Don Simpson followup ref I made to try and save face also seemed to completely miss the mark.
Shane your blog is very, very good and I think Stars made a great choice in adding you to the team.
Good luck in 2011!

Not sure if i saw, but post #128 was my correcting your grammar.
As for non-poker goals, I guess I'm not a goal-oriented person as such...I would like to be able to make a living writing one day. I guess I just want to be doing what I'm doing now, poker and writing, but doing it better and more efficiently. Sorry for the lame answer.

I thought we were going to be PokerStars Valentines yesterday when you started chatting with me from the rail, then when you ignored me when I was on the rail, I figured, She's just not that into me. But yes sweetie, here is your Valentine gift:
And my best guess is to ignore Sooners, I have no idea what he's talking about either.

I would love to be able to do just what you describe. I think it's called "moderation." My beloved former boss Spal gave me similar advice, telling me not to set myself up for failure by giving myself an allin-or-fold line. I love my morning/coffee cigarettes, I just don't know how to put the pack away for the rest of the day.

as a gross over simplification.... from pearljammer, i learned that the right play is to always fold. from shaniac, i learned that the right play is to always go all in. thank you in retrospect for lending your own unknowing shoulders in pursuit my own successes, and congrats on the success that you have found.
maybe tennis for real next san remo as i shout to you from my balcony?

Hilarious actually, and TY! San Remo is a longshot this year, trying to not leave the country. April in New York is good tennis though after or before Mohegan.

TY Matt, pretty sure I remember the first tournament we played together (I wanna say I busted you in a flip in a 1K rebuy).

Re: Shaniac: The Corner
1. If you were in your early 20's today and you were armed with the knowledge and experience you currently have, would you take a shot at being a professional poker player? In the same scenario, assume you don't possess a college degree and really can't think of a career that interests you yet - would that change anything?
2. Do you think its possible to make an okay living (say $40k net income per year) grinding $300-$2500 live tournaments like circuit events, LAPC, Venetian Deepstack, etc. while mixing in some online poker (2 days/week maximum)?
3. I look up to guys like you, Foucault and Todd Terry because of your experience, punctuality, general intelligence, etc. Do you think its a negative for me to consider professional gamblers as my role models?
This was taken from your blog:
"Well, I am now coming to the end of my third consecutive losing year in poker, and the relationship is also over, and I know that if I had handled my life more responsibly, I would not be presented with the shambles of an existence that was very promising not too long ago. I know what did me in, and it was not a lack of passion, hard work, or intelligence, but rather a lack of organization for too long and, in many cases, a flippant disregard for an important detail or too. I took a lot for granted."
It really speaks to me. I'm now fanatically devoted to reading every blog post you have ever made.

Best gift this year. Stars must have taken my observer chat away....as I never would have missed the opportunity.

You don't have to mention any names... but most money you've seen a degen poker player lose in the pits.... stories would be epic...

- mid 6 figures.
- I was going to go with a multiway tie and list my several favorite majors, but the actual definitive answer is the Commerce LAPC Celebrity Invitational. You cannot have more fun in a poker tournament.
- Think I said 109 rebuy or 109 cubed, will stick with that.
- Pizza.

If a pool is deceptively shallow, can you dive in?
