Satellite Prices

Never posted in the MTT forums, so hopefully this is an appropriate topic for this forum.

I've never studied tournaments before, so I'm pretty ignorant at this side of the game.

I saw a couple satellites in a lobby and had a question.

There's a $3,500 tournament event, and there are two different satellites to get into the event.

There's a $50+$5 and a $125+$12.

The $50 gives a seat for every 70 players.

The $125 gives a set for every 28 players.

I can see a 40% relationship between the different entry fees and the seats / players. But, I'm just wondering what are the pros and cons of these two different sizes.

I can see someone would play the 50 instead of the 125 because it's cheaper. I could see why someone would wish to play the 125 because the field will probably be smaller and maybe it doesn't go as long, I'm guessing...

Is there some other insight I'm missing?

Thanks.

Re: Satellite Prices

Well obviously the $55 will be a longer shot than the $137.

I they both get a large field, the time to complete is not going to be that different, just a little longer for the smaller buy-in. But the $137 is unlikely to get a large field and may not even run at all if the target tournament is not a popular one.

The higher buy-in will have better players.

And one thing to consider is how many seats the satellite is awarding. A satellite that awards 50 seats will never play shorthanded. A satellite paying only 1 seat will have anything from full ring to heads-up as well as a sudden switch from shorthanded (10-12 players left) back to full ring (final table).

Players bubbling the satellite will share the remainder of the prize pool: This is either fully awarded to the player bubbling the satellite or divided into rebates, usually equal to the buy-in. Check the lobby for that if it's online.

Oh and generally it's good to win!
