Re: protect yourself and your other players
A couple years back I was at one of the WSOP secondary feature tbls. During a break I was told by our dealer that the spectators sitting above us railing the main feature tbl in the "balcony/stadium" seating(who were actually turned around to face/rail our tbl) can see the players cards on that side of the tbl. I believe they still have the feature tbls set up this way and it really should be changed. No spectators should be sitting above any tbl that close. Obv a separate issue from the media but one I feel should also be looked into.

Re: protect yourself and your other players
Meh this is kind of an important thing, there have been several times deep in a tournament I've had my back to the rail and definitely felt I had to be very careful about how I looked at my cards. On the opposite side there have also been times when railing a tournament I have been able to see people's hole cards as they are not careful enough looking at them. And obviously the media are that much harder to keep track of where they're standing.
I've always assumed no one was actually trying to cheat this way, but at the same time it could be pretty easy to do so if you're not careful. If anything i could see a player's friend on the rail coming up to him on break and sayign hey I can see this guy's cards in front of me, but actually having a friend in the media doing it is pretty ****ed up and would be that much harder to protect against, and is obviously significantly more scummy.
All that being said, for all the build up Deeb gave for this I'm pretty disappointed.

Re: protect yourself and your other players
fwiw, when covering events (I don't do Europe, btw), I try to avoid seeing player hole cards in order to not give away information to others at the table. I'd guess other experienced media members would take the same approach. if a player even sees a media member trying to see hole cards, they should get said member away from the table, mention it to the floor and probably take it to the media member's superiors.

no way you would have to hold them up in the air and then we'd all need good eyesight, been up there several times and it would be beyond impossible to see

If one our reporters said something to a player about seeing their cards, it was surely done with the players protection in mind.
I feel confident that if there was any problems with poker media at any events, it was certainly not with our team.

Duh, PokerNews can't even get the board right let alone players exposed hole cards...

1.45pm: Huge pot for Juanda
John Juanda has taken a massive pot off David Vamplew. He open-raised and got a call from the young Scot. On the 5♠J♦3♥ flop, Juanda bet 270,000 and Vamplew made the call. On the K♣ turn, Juanda made it 560,000 and got another call from Vamplew. Finally, on the 7♠ river, Juanda bet a hefty 1.25million. Once more Vamplew called for a huge showdown:
Vamplew: K♥Q♥ for the turned top pair
Juanda: 5♦5♣ for flopped set
With that, Juanda moves up to around 9.5million while Vamplew slips to 1.8million. -- SY

Juanda Snatches the Lead
Posted 2010-10-04 12:49 GMT by danafish
John Juanda opened for 165,000 and David Vamplew flat-called - the first call of a Juanda raise we've seen since that curious jacks-versus-nines encounter with Artur Wasek.
They saw a 5 J 3 flop and Juanda bet out 270,000. Vamplew called, and they saw the turn.
The turn was the K and this time Juanda bet out 560,000. A bit of a tank from Vamplew this time, but again, he flat-called.
The pot was getting big by now, and when the river came down an irrelevant-looking 7 Juanda bet out 1.25 million, giving Vamplew a look reminiscent of the internet's famous dramatic lemur. But Vamplew snap-called this time, and then was crestfallen when he found that his turned top pair with K Q was no good against Juanda's flop set with 5 5 .
Juanda picked up the 4.645 million pot, and lurched back into the chip lead. Vamplew dropped right down to around 1.7 million.

In this hand I mucked and did not tell anyone what I had at any point.

5.57pm: One for Juanda
David Vamplew made it 320,000 and John Juanda called. The flop came 4♠2♣J♣ and both checked. On the 6♦ turn Juanda check-called Vamplew's 350,000, then both slowed to a check on the 3♥ river. Juanda showed A♠3♣ and the rivered pair was better than Vamplew's T♥7♦ for nothing. -- SY
