to be on the rail occasionally (or always) for a friend is one thing, but to deal with poker as an olympic sport is another complete different and totally unnecessary. (except on the poker world cup by countries)

I think it has some historical roots. Specially on the case with Brazil. That "proud" is a quite common reaction of minorities. "Minorities" (or people that feel diminished in some way) tend to overcelebrate when they're successfull.
