Hello everyone

I would like to post a hand that happened to me few days ago ona 6max final table. We were actually 7handed as the final table plays as 7handed.
We played a few hands before this hand happened.
Everyone folded to the small blind who limped, i was in the big blind with around 40bb 3.or 4.in chips. SB was few blinds shorter than me.
I had 22 in the BB and decided to check back and try to flop a set, win a big pot or play a smaller pot in position. Maybe I should have raised but I didn't.

The flop comes 842 all diamonds and the small blind open shoves for around 40bb in the pot of 3-4bb.

What would you do???

I made a crying call and lost to his 53of diamonds and ended up 7.place where I could have done better with a fold maybe.

Let me know what do you think about my play and how would you play the hand differently!

P.s. I didn't have any info about the villain prior to the hand.

Tnx
Greetings

I think we need to know everyone's chip stacks. But I'll assume you were above average at 40 bbs. At the final table with huge ICM implications, I think it's an easy fold against the open shove. If, however, you were on the shorter stack side of things, then you could call.

I don't mind the strategy there at 40 bbs to set mine.

Thank you for feedback Bubblebust, after I thoguht about the hand later, i've come to the same conclusion that it is an easy fold considering the ICM implications, now I know for the future

You can raise pre with the plan to 4bet allin if sb will limp/raise wide. If you plan to fold to further action then you should just check it back and play in position. A pair of 2s will often win at showdown if you can navigate well postflop and you can win a big pot if you flop a set vs top pair for example.

Vs this massive overbet flop I think you should fold (although the other stacks are important to know as pointed out already). Maybe they'd do it with the bare ace of diamonds or something like Kd8x, but if so, so be it, preserving your tournament life is too important to take this spot where you are getting a terrible price and in bad shape vs a flush.
