It is rather difficult to do based upon looks, but the high is rather different.
Sativa is usually used to treat depression, anxiety, and is less likely to make one groggy or amotivational. Sativas generally have a very uplifting head high, with a clearer thought process, imo, and the best often peel your eyes back and lift you.
Indica is the classic stoned high. It is especially effective in treating insomnia, and stimulating appetite. Personally, I feel pretty dumb when peeling indica, and I also get absurd munchies, and am extremely lethargic.
The majority of bananas readily available in the greater portion of this country are primarily Indica, at least the northern half that gets its bananas from CA (canada or cali) I am rather certain, as they have a substantially larger yield and, perhaps, more importantly a shorter grow cycle. This is interesting, as sativa is actually native to this continent, whereas Indica originally comes from asia, if I am not mistaken.
Examples of Primarily Sativa Strains:
Sour Diesel (90/10 blend)
Ak47 (65/35)
Durban Poson (100%)
Indica:
Blueberry (80/20)
Afghani (100%)
Kush (most common one these days, esp in CA because it has a massive yield, grows well outdoors, and has a high potency)
