I suck at Internet Poker MTTs

Dunno if this goes here...

Anyway, I've had some success in live MTTs but I cannot for the life of me get good results online. I don't have HUD or whatever software that may or may not give one an edge but is it really that much of a handicap for me (since I have NO software) so much that I can barely finish ITM online, vs live which I do finish deep quite frequently?

If useful, for both live and online, the player pool is about the same, a few hundred, so it's not really about the sizes of the tourneys.

Is there such a HUGE difference between live and online MTTs because, for me, apparently there *is* as I suck so badly online. It's very frustrating. Please help.

When it comes to tournaments with a decent buy in, there is indeed a huge difference. Live MTTs are very very soft compared to online 109+r, for example (even though the first usually have bigger buy ins). There are tons of recreational players and weak regs playing live MTTs while online you will face a lot of solid grinders and skilled pros (again, considering we are talking about tournaments with a decent buy in). Try getting a HUD and then a coach and good luck developing your game.

Yes there is a huge difference in my opinion. I dont think it is because you dont have a HUD though. Just keep playing, get some experience online and you will get the hang of it

I hope you're not playing the same both online and live. if so that's your problem.

that's like a comedian doing the same show in Baltimore as he does in Houston. and that man's name is Gilbert Gottfried.

Re: I suck at Internet Poker MTTs

Because an online 200$ MTT is infinitely tougher than a live 200$.
You should probably play 1/10th of your livebuyins online to start with.

Re: I suck at Internet Poker MTTs

you are probably not that good at poker in general. Live poker tends to be a lot softer so your skill edge doesn't really need to be that good to beat it. like rowniwn said play lower to get used to online mtts.

Re: I suck at Internet Poker MTTs

No, I don't play in the exact level online vs live, i.e. I don't enter $1K live MTT and $1K online MTT (more like $0-100)...I know the general skill difference, including/esp w/ the HUD. Still, I'm not doing that great online vs live I'm doing fine.

Re: I suck at Internet Poker MTTs

First of all, a HUD is not as important as you think. Especially as you probably don't play many tables it should not be an excuse to lose.
Plus if you think a hud is all that important, why not get one?

Re: I suck at Internet Poker MTTs

Is there a tangible advantage w/ those HUDs vs players w/o? I don't want to get one as I believe in feel more vs stats in marginal situations.

Re: I suck at Internet Poker MTTs

it's not possible to play enough live tournaments for those results to mean anything, so comparing how you're doing online versus live is an exercise in futility

huds are personal preference; consider them a net neutral until you understand what features and capabilities are available to you and if you'll be able to use that data in real-time, and then decide if you need one or not. there are plenty of guys out there who are huge winners who never use a hud.

it's a lot easier to focus on what's important if you just assume your mtt game always needs refining, so spend time away from the tables going over common mtt spots (push/fold, resteals, etc.), talking with other mtt players, and keep grinding.

If you believe in feelpoker that might explain why you cant win online.

You're reading it wrong: I said 'feel' in marginal situations, not that I 'feel' my gut shot coming and I'm calling w/ horrendous odds, for example. Of course I rely on math as much as the next competent player.

Also, I never said that I'm not winning online, just that I barely finish ITM for online MTTs and not deeper vs live. I know that I have my work cut out for me online.

Re: I suck at Internet Poker MTTs

Looking at ITM stats is likely not going to give you a good idea of how you're performing though. There's plenty of players with high ITM %'s that are really terrible at poker and huge losing players.

Regarding a HUD, as cborders said it's definitely a personal preference thing. If you're commonly thinking to your self things like "I wish I knew whether he'd 3bet me before" or "I can't remember if he folded to that 3bet before or not" as an example, things like HUDs are probably worth your while. If you're someone who intrinsically pay attention so those types of details, a HUD would likely not help much.

Re: I suck at Internet Poker MTTs

Although I'd say HUDs certainly aren't vital to winning at online poker, the sorts of players who can win without them are the more experienced ones rather than getting in to online poker without learning the basics that HUDs are useful for

Not to mention a large population of people who feel they became better after dropping the HUD as they tend to over analyse situations.

Realistically, for most recreational MTT players, there's only a handful of stats from HUDs from 1000s you can potentially use that are actually useful, given you rarely get enough hands to make a meaningful sample.

How so? I made my statement to dissuade myself from wanting a HUD (at this moment) because I don't just want to look at the stats presented and go from there (albeit I have NO experience using a HUD - that's my concern, that I will only rely on what the HUD gives me), but instead want to draw from my notes and history w/ that particular player. I'm not saying that I 'feel' my gut is coming and will pay dearly for the next card regardless of price...more like, I feel that V won't fire another barrel, so it's safe to call w/ a FD (assuming good odds), or feel V is trying to steal and float to resteal on later sts, etc etc etc...all of this 'feel' based on experience w/ the V in question, not some crazy notion flying around in the air.

^To be fair, I have NO HUD experience, so I dunno if it will help or hinder me.
