I'm not sure if many of you guys play this on a regular basis but I am thinking about giving it a shot for the first time and was wondering how soft/tough the field is likely to be...?

It's insanely tough, you should probably hone your game playing the 5/10 Play Chip cash tables first.

You have to finish in the top 1% to win a ticket worth about $1. That means your EV for entering the freeroll is only about 1 cent, totally not worth it. Try the PokerSchool Online freerolls, in any given 1 your EV will probably be more like 4 cents, and if you play plenty in a month it's not hard to get, $10, $50 or $100 reward at the end of it.

FWIW I used to play a ton of these round 1 freerolls and I'd say its basically possible to make the rd 2 every single week.

That is solid advice. I do not think playing it for fun is a waste of time.

This. I have a ton of tickets, unfortunately I doubt I will ever get to use them

The easiest one is Badugi. Then NLO8, mixed games, etc. and everything else with NLHE being the worst.

I used to love those freerolls... I played stud-8 freeroll way back when (2006 or so), sat out for an hour and a half in the middle, came back and won it. Felt like I was Phil Ivey at the time...

They are not profitable, and next to useless when it comes to improving your game, but if you're playing them for fun they can be.

Best I did was 13th in a Hubble's in 05 or so when only the FT made it to Rd 2. Epic beat.
