How do you get in good volume in MTT's?? How do you get in good volume in MTT's??

Hey guys,

My year looks likely to be a losing one (my first in 10 years unfortunately) and i'm pretty much chalking it up to volume. I've only played 160 tournies for the year!

I work a full time job with shift work, and on my days off i won't play more than 4 tournies for the day...I usually start around 4am - 5am (i live in Australia) and like to be done with tournies by 8am - 9am if i don't go deep.

My questions are...

1) Do these people who get 1,000+ volume in for the year have a job?

2) Do people who get in a lot of volume play all day on their day off?

3) Do you use 2 monitors?

4) How many tournies will you normally get in for the day?

Also any extra tips on how you get in good volume (Mtt's only) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

1. Maybe. Ask them

2. Probably

3. Maybe

4. 3.50

*Register more tournaments*

Is it really that hard to figure out? If you want to play more tournaments hit the register button more times. If you play on a site that offers multi table SNG's try playing some of those while playing other tournaments to increase volume.

160 tournaments works out to something like 3 a week. If you want to play more tournaments, play more tournaments. Why are you making it so complicated?

1) yes, they play poker as their job. There are people that work full time and get in huge volume but they are rare people who don't sleep.

2) Yes. You have to make choices. Do you want to go party all night on your days off/go to shows/hang with friends/lay on the couch or do you want to (hopefully) have a secondary income stream from playing poker? If you want to get better, make money and have a secondary income stream from poker, you dedicate your free time to the game.

3) This is a strange question to ask. Some people do, some use one 30" monitor, it all depends on how much volume you put in across how many sites. If you have high volume, can play 25+ tables at a time and play across 3+ sites, a 2 monitor setup might be for you. Some that have 2 monitors use one for poker and the other for music/video streaming and internet surfing. Find what works best for you

4) Depends on the day you play and how long you register. You say you start at 4-5am and want to be done by 8-9am, do you mean done registering for tournaments after 4-5 hours or do you mean you want to be done your session in 4-5 hours?

If you want to be done playing in 4-5 hours, play SnGs or grind cash. If it is done registering in 4-5 hours; as stated above, add in MTT SnGs for more volume, lengthen your window for registering.

What BI do you play? Micro/low/mid/high?
How many sites do you play?

You could look to add some lower BI tournaments that run during your reg time frame, you could add in one or more other poker sites to capture their MTT schedule.

try setting goals for yourself and get more active in forums like PG&C
Set volume goals for a week or a month or the year, give yourself some incentive to play more than 3 tournaments per week.

What is your definition of a "winning year"? Do you have an expectation to have X hundred/thousands more dollars for personal spending while increasing your bankroll year over year and moving up in stakes or do you deposit $500 every year and if you have more than that at the end you count it as a winning year?

1) Do these people who get 1,000+ volume in for the year have a job?

I got 3400 games in between May and today. No job but I'm studying (and never go there..)

2) Do people who get in a lot of volume play all day on their day off?

I played 712 hours which is 109 hours a month or ~210 minutes a day. It's doable with a job if you play like 20pm-23.30pm unless you are too tired.

3) Do you use 2 monitors?

24" main monitor, 22" 2nd monitor and a 17" laptop. Basically I use the laptop for 2+2, skype, spotify and the 2nd monitor for main and game lobbies.

4) How many tournies will you normally get in for the day?

I play everything between 1 and 24 tables with a sweet spot somewhere between 4 and 12. Having 6 tables going throughout the whole session is a good run for me.

3400 games / 6,5 months = 17,4 games a day. I focus on turbos and reg late when I'm playing my evening schedule so it would be less if I skipped the late regs (you obv save a lot of playing time if you just join and flip yourself a stack) and focussed more on normal reg speed.

So you play 4 hour session and 4 tournaments, that is completely waste of time. I think you should reg 1h for 5-10 reg speed mtts and 2nd hour for turbos. Once you handle that add tables.

I wouldn't play mtts in your position - too much variance for the volume your going to get in and with edges getting smaller its prob becoming a waste of your time....spend that time on something with a better long term outlook even if your passing up short term money

No that is not a "complete waste of time." Obviously i've figured that i'm not getting in enough volume but it's hardly a "complete waste of time."

lol So your saying play cash? I hate cash games (like most tourney players).

I disagree with your variance comment. Isn't really relevant. So just because i don't play many tournies means i may as well quit because of variance? this is lol.

And i disagree about it becoming a waste of my time...obviously you don't play tournaments at all...

Yeh for me it is! I would love to get in 1000 in a year!

Yeh as i said before i'm on shift work, so i rarely do tournies before afternoon shift (because the tournies won't finish in time) and after a night shift (because all the good tournies have already started...not to mention i'm exhausted!)

Plus i only get 2/5 weekends off...So yeh...hard to play a lot but i'll work it out.

With 2-3 hours left before you are due to finish register for regular speed MTT sngs 90-180 mans, with 1-2 hours register for turbos MTT SNGs and with about an hour left do regular speed SNGs. The exact times depend how hard/soft your end time is (i.e. what the obligations are at the end of a session)

1000+ tournaments is only 3 per day so they have other jobs, that sounds like instead of watching trash on TV when they come in from work they reg to 4 MTTs and go to bed when they bust from the last one. I have no idea but as a job I would imagine people are doing more like 10000 per year.

I'm about to start my sunday mtt session, I'm regged for 90 tournies or so, will probably go over 100 cause I can't register >6hrs in advance on stars and will late reg a few when I start. 160 mtts in a year doesn't make any sense to me even if you play only once a week...
