How did you guys picked up MTT?

Hey guys i'm kinda new to online poker just started out playing in may? making small deposits on carbon and then moving to stars playing micro cash games but obvz busto.

When i was tilting from the dwnswings in cash,i registered some small tourneys such as big 8.80,$4.40,some other turbos and 3x turbo +R. I played about 12 games and min cashed 5 of them . The last one i played was the MicroMil $22 ME event (i got the ticket free from the contest video) and i min cashed too.

I kinda feel i play decent in the normal structures rather than the turbo and 3x-turbo rebuys because i'm relatively tight nitty which is how you should play right? My stats are really passive,i'm on 18/9 most of the time (although i do look for spots to 3bet from blinds to the steals alot). I feel i should play MTTs as i'm kind of the impatient guy you know... rather than earning 2bb/100 at NL5. I want to have a big ''pay day'' from the MTTs. I'm kinda getting the hang of it,want to learn, play and grind MTTs.

My question is,how did you guys start playing MTTs. Did you guys build your roll from the cash games and transition over to MTTs? Or did you directly deposit a big roll to play it? Erm... something like learn/study the game and playing at the same time? I understand some people who really want to take poker seriously, they hire coaching from their own pockets and treat it as an investment for a bigger cause. Unfortunately i couldn't afford that so i want to pick up the game on my own. I hope you guys could share some insights on how did you learn to play MTTs when you first started out. Books,2+2 or maybe even friends who helped you?

Re: How did you guys picked up MTT?

I made the common mistake early on of not exercising smart bankroll management. for mtts 180man+, keep 200 buyins in your account. move up and down levels as needed, until you hit a minimum that you feel is fairly easily replaceable, and just play that all the way through and if you hit 0 just replace it; that should be fairly easy.

with proper bankroll management you'll be able to more easily learn the ropes of not only the game you're trying to beat, but the ropes of variance in that game. the barbed wire double-dutch.

Re: How did you guys picked up MTT?

I picked up the game without any formal coaching. Although it will take you much longer to learn the concepts on your ow, I think its the best way. Also having a couple of people to discuss hands with etc really helps your game. Hand discussions on forums are the best way to quickly improve. Post your thought process even though it might be wrong. Lot of people like to critisize, but thats the only way to get better.

Play about 500 45mans, then move onto about 700-1000 2.5/180s . This will help you get your basics really strong, and since fields are small, you will be able to see bubble, FT bubble, ICM , situations many times, and will be able to apply them better when you see a similar situation in a Big field MTT.

Also , It might feel nice to cash 5/10 MTTs, but Trust me, this is just variance.. Its almost impossible to keep that ITM% in the long run. And if you lack patience, MTT is NOT the game for you .

I deposited, bustod many times. About 2 months back I started with a $400 roll . Initially I just played $1.5 45manTurbos, and a few $2.5/180s to keep my abi at $2. With about $600 I played $3.5/45s and $2.5/180s and a few capped tourneys. Now I have about $2000.

Patience and the ability to not tilt and play your A game, no matter what beats come your way, is the only way to survive in the MTT world.

But where did you learn your game? solely on 2+2 and playing at the same time? posting hands and thoughts right here? that's it? i kinda feel 45s are not for me because of the small pay outs(it'll not motivate me at all). i'm pretty sure i'll do badly at that. 180s seems like a good idea though.

Re: How did you guys picked up MTT?

i started poker at age 12, was playing play money and at 13 i got a $25 walmart card for my birthday and traded it to a friend for a $25 prepaid master card. i ran that up in 9max sngs to around 300ish. then entered a $4.40 mtt and binked for over $700. at that time i started asking parrents and uncle/grandparents for different poker books (they all thought i was crazy and still playing play money lol) at 15/16 i started paying for training site.. and so on...

so i know exactly what it is like to have NO money but really want to play and get better. my advice is to deposit what you can (if 25 is all that is okay) and don't play anything higher than $3.30 games. with $25 there is a good chance you will go broke once or twice but eventually at these stakes you can bink for a couple hundred. when you get around 300 in your account it is all bankroll management. if you are going to play mtts don't play anything more than 100buy ins (unless you have below $330 then you can play $3.30or less).
it is going to be very important to be able to deal with losing and not tilt off money as you have no way to put back on that kind of money (i remember tilting off over 2k at age 14.. not good) mtts are a game with high variance and you are going to hit big swings from time to time, you are going to have to learn to dust it off.

now once you are playing and gaining xp, you are going to have to invest something into improving your game. now im assuming you work, so maybe take $20 dollars off you pay check every here and there (which you have to do if you need to bebuy for your $25) and buy some good poker books (GET HARRINGTON ON HOLD'EM! vol 1 and 2) and when you start making money in poker you start using a certain % of your winnings towards training sites and ect....

best of luck!
