Does any long-time MTT grinder still enjoy it?

I thought about making this thread for a while, but the Deeb thread made me want to post this now. I am in law school and I don't like it. I think about the kind of lifestyle that having my JD will provide for me ... a nice, steady income, but waking up at 7 every morning, putting on a suit, and working long hours. I think the poker lifestyle would be much more enjoyable ... waking up when I want, wearing what I want, traveling where I want, and taking time off when I want.

Has anyone been playing high stakes poker - mostly online with some live events mixed in - for over three years, and still enjoys it? Why does virtually every person I talk to say that this type of lifestyle is unhealthy, and not one that they wish to pursue past age 29?

Re: Does any long-time MTT grinder still enjoy it?

it took me only 8 or 9 months to get sick of that daily grind. and quitting mtts was probably one of the better decisions i have made in my life so far. my sleeping schedule was just so messed up that i was basically awake when everybody else was sleeping. and that sucked a ton.

If you play with discipline and live with discipline i think you will enjoy it far more then most grinders who dont. I.e.... playing only 3/4 days a week, having a std sleep schedule, working out constantly and eating healthy will be very ++++ life ev and mtt ev.

Re: Does any long-time MTT grinder still enjoy it?

A lot of bitter MTT regs simply aren't approaching the game correctly away from the tables. In other words, they might play most of their hands well, but they fail miserably at things like game selection (Hint: $1k's aren't where most of your profit comes from as a professional MTTer); playing with your own money if at all possible (easiest way to double your profit!); doing things to reduce variance (chopping, volume); etc.

I haven't exactly been a regular forever but I think I have a good approach to poker and can reasonably expect to make a living from it for the foreseeable future. I can say this despite the fact that there are a ton of people in this forum who have been and always will be better than me at poker. I like poker -- don't lose sight of the fact that we are getting paid 6 figures a year to play a game on the computer!

yeah if you have a balance in your life i think its very enjoyable.

i've been playing for 3 years seriously and I still love what I do much more than any job, just depends on your choices and what you want to be doing in your life.

All the stuff thats been said before really. I gave up a short career in IT this year, after I got my degree, as office jobs and (most) 9-5 jobs are the true grind.

At first I played too much and got tilted easily, but after reading a few of these threads the stuff that comes up again and again, and now that i have applied it to myself, so obviously works and increases your poker enjoyment and profits;

Poker/Life balance
Exercise/diet
Diversifying from just one form of poker and learning as many forms/games as you can
Taking a break when running bad

Re: Does any long-time MTT grinder still enjoy it?

i dont really grind that much but its still pretty awesome cause it allows me to do whatever i want at any possible time and also I have as much free time as possible. Being able to travel a lot more cause off Poker is also awesome. (esp if you do nonpoker things too, while traveling to a Pokerevent, or just being able to travel a lot in general).

The time commitment and the hours we have to play (well, we Euros) is the only bad thing about it and it sure does **** up the sleeping schedule a lot, but besides I still do enjoy it a lot and I doubt that there would be something else that I would like to do.

Re: Does any long-time MTT grinder still enjoy it?

I have been grinding low stakes for 2 years now. Making around 20k a year and i absolutely love it. I live in a place where there isnt many decent paying jobs so being able to play a game for 20k a year is the ****.

Re: Does any long-time MTT grinder still enjoy it?

I grinding pretty ridiculously from mid to end of 07 and it burnt me out. I haven't really fully got back into poker until just recently. I plan on starting tournys fulltime in 2010, I just need to come up with a schedule thatll leave me balanced and time for going out and doing normal ****.

Anyone wanna post what their MTT schedule will be for 2010??
