PODIUM

(note...this song scored a 47 on my 100 point scale, so if I still don't sound that enthusiastic...)

In 3rd place scoring 9 points:

Interesting song with 4 verses & no chorii.

Spoiler:
RAORoman - Wiley - Bring Them All / Holy Grime (feat. Devlin)

This feels like it's trying to be too hard to just be fast. It's the reason I've never been that into Twista. I mean yeah, it's impressive that you can rap really fast, but it just kind of becomes a jumbled mess. I was very hopeful because I've thoroughly enjoyed several other Wiley songs, but this just doesn't quite do it. The Devlin verses are worse. Nothing really quite hits the way I want a Wiley song to because it's too focused on just pushing through at breakneck speed. Still not awful, but not my thing.

Sorry, work interrupted.

In 2nd place scoring 11 points:

This isn't quite as impactful as I would like it to be in certain places, but it's a fairly pleasant listening experience overall.

Spoiler:
tchaz - Dave x AJ Tracey - Thiago Silva

I like that this guy just calls himself "Dave". That's pretty arrogant, & that's cool. Although I guess sometimes he calls himself "Santan Dave". AJ's lyrics get a bit forced at times, & they could hit harder in places, & I don't really understand some of the slang involved (although I do enjoy the soccer references). It's good, could be better, but mildly addictive.

In 1st place scoring 14 points (unless he decided to sit out the category):

Good beat, good flow, good rhythm. Could be a bit tighter, but overall an excellent effort.

Spoiler:
Nick Royale - Skepta - Man

I was immediately Skepta-cal about anything submitted by Nick…but I could tell about 5 seconds in I was going to like this. Enjoy the cadence & rhythm of the rapping a lot. The "skit" in the middle is kind of annoying, but it only lasts a few seconds. I also think the 1st verse is better than the 2nd, but overall I'm quite happy with the song.

As you should be

Solid write-ups so far. If 3rd was a 47/100 I'm curious what last was

I've started listening to my songs, gunning for a friday reveal.

Not sure if it's a tradition quite yet, but it runs every 4th year just like the WC.

It was around a 23 iirc. There was nothing that compared to that 8 you submitted me a few years ago in my standalone Walrus...

Yeah I didn't really know. Just saying something is a tradition is enough to get the haters furious nowadays.

And forget the WC, could have waited a year and walrused in the morning, NIKLAS EDIN'D at night. I'll make sure to stack the new playlists with Serbian bluegrass in case the game runs.

Top 3 rap pretty strong. Then again, despite not liking rap much, I've got a soft spot for grime.

The other day I caught one of my new co-workers humming Functions of the Low. I asked him if he likes Ruff Sqwad, the confusion was complete.

I believe all of the judges should now have a list of 9 or 10 songs (depending on whether they are submitters as well or not).

I think we have walrein revealing on Thursday and fnord_too at the weekend.

I/we/Nick/the walrus am/are/is open to offers for other reveals, particularly tonight or tomorrow.

Yeah, and I obv have no problem with you uploading it to soundcloud, but the fact that there are no youtube uploads and my download link was mysteriously deleted within minutes, someone on the internet doesn't want this MEGA HIT to spread.

I'm glad you liked it though

Just as one's imagination is stirred by a girl's smile, so is one's imagination stirred by the possibilities of walrus.

Tonight I shall take you into a deep, dark forest where 2+2=5, and the path leading out is only wide enough for one.

But what at time? Preference?

Indeed, soundcloud deleted my upload within seconds.

I have listened to everything several times and this is a raging success.Ty to all the submitters - every entry is worth listening to repeatedly. Well, every entry except one, as we'll see.

I'm sorry if this cat contributed to the smallish number of entrants, but those who did enter can give themselves autohigh fives for their efforts here.

However I'm doing the write ups in real time, so there may be a few pauses whilst I struggle for the mots justes.

Spoiler:
Ok, so this is unfortunate. I never liked the band who made the original version of the track for this entry. Worse, the song was played incessantly at certain clubs I used to go to. I never could understand why. For the first n-years I hated those ~four minutes every time and just didn't know where to hide. Eventually i became inured to it. But, by god the world would be a better place if this track had never been recorded.

It's synth-pop. I like my cyborgs to have some sentient/sentimental side - even if it is just feeling a little pain the diodes down their left sides. I'm pretty sure Guy-Manuel and Thomas do. Here the cyborgs are being bossed about by some tough-as-old-boots scots bint and forced to repetitively bore us to death. oh my electric sheep. :sigh:

The submitter couldn't have known all of that, but the remix submitted here has nothing to recommend it - i.e. doesn't do anything for the song unless you like bog-standard Australian house remixes. I'd blame Cap.tain Bink.les for this fiasco, but I don't think even he could be a fan. Shoo, shoo, back to dirty Boges and Della, capt.

A cover, so I had to ding this for category fit. And it's a well known song.

The first time I listened it really didn't make any strong impression on me. I left it a day or so and looked up the act. Wikipedia tells me they specialize in Metal cover versions of non-Metal songs. That's probably up there with lounge-jazz versions of Buzzcocks songs for tchaz-woat genre.

But, fortunately, wikipedia is lying here.

This isn't my favourite kind of thing, but it's a reasonable stab at a brooding, intense, dystopian version of what was original all pretty butterflies and fluffy clouds classic. Definitely worth a few listens.

Whilst thinking about my entry I found these excellent Soulwax 2x2 mixes on youtube. (Search "Soulwax 2x2", ldo.) In #3 they devote the last hour to the works of Keith Forsey (Georgio Moroder's drummer on Donna Summer's I Feel Love and played on many, many other songs - you'll be surprised). Fantastic listen, 10/10, recommended.

Turns out Forsey tried his hand a producing in the early 80s and was responsible for Billy Idol's post-Generation X hits: White Wedding ... Dancing With Myself ...

Let's talk about the French. : pause: :sigh: : pause:

They have a long tradition, from gypsy jazz and the Hot Club de Paris, through Johnny Halliday to le ceroc and on, of seeing that there is something there in whatever-type-of-music but not quite grokking it.

They have all of the words and the smart answers and haircuts, but don't have dat raggamuffin style.

luv you ct

So this is another exemplar - even though perhaps, being generous, one of the least worst. It's a cover of a GOAT song*, and it's not terrible ... not terrible at all. By the end it even gets some momentum going and is 85% convincing. But they can't help themselves but throw in the circus act/balkananics/...

Goodness me.

* don't open the spoiler unless you want to know what the song is.
