Nightwish - Amaranth
7.1/10

Quote:
Nightwish is cheesy as hell as far as metal goes but I can dig it. I really like her voice, I just wish they were a little bit more ambitious with the track. There's so much more they could do here that they just... don't. Oh well. She's enough to carry it this far.

Eliza Doolittle - Skinny Genes
7.2/10

Quote:
I really like the swingy aspect of this song. It's a nice rhythm and I can groove to it. Her voice itself is a bit generic but I like the overall feel this brings to the table. Name's a nice pun, too.

Two Steps From Hell - Star Sky
7.3/10

Quote:
Band name is edgy as hell, song checks out though. I think I've already stated that I'm a fan of maximalistic arrangements, so the orchestral backing pleases me, and I really like her voice. Song evokes a lot of good feelings in me. Sounds like it could be off a film score tbh.

M83 - Go!
7.4/10

Quote:
M83 is pretty hit or miss for me. This works, though. I don't really like the intro verse, but when the arrangement expands, the song gets significantly better. If it weren't for the verses, this might actually have scored higher. As it is, they kind of hold it back.

Sleigh Bells - Riot Rhythm
7.5/10

Quote:
Surprised myself with this placement. Kinda hated this song the first time I listened to it, actually, but it grew on me a lot. I'm not even really sure why I like it so much, it's just... cool. Idk. My walrus. Fight me.

Violet Sun - Falling In Love
7.7/10

Quote:
This is what I wish Nightwish was. This is how you do female-led metal. The tone of the guitar itself is a bit generic, but I really like the arrangement of the song itself. It's just Good.

Arcade Fire - In The Backseat
7.8/10

Quote:
How to get me to like your slower, ballady song:
Step 1. Be Arcade Fire

nah but seriously this is good. I really like how the arrangement supports the song rather than competing for attention or, on the flip side, being completely invisible. Her voice, of course, is incredible, and I really dig all the Arcade Fire-y touches thrown on top.

Camp Cope - Done
7.9/10

Quote:
Yeah so someone finally caught onto the fact that I like indie/alt rock after a giant pile of ballads to work through. The vocalist’s voice is really interesting, and I like it a lot, and I really like the overall mood of the song here. Can’t say a ton beyond that; it’s a good song that happens to fall into a style that I really enjoy.

Within Temptation - The Howling
8/10

Quote:
If it hasn't become evident, I tend to enjoy female-voiced metal more than male-voiced metal. Idk why. Something about it just works for me. Once again, this trumps Nightwish by virtue of taking a lot more risks and generally being much more proactive in their arrangement. Someday a band will rise to prominence that will eliminate the need to compare every female metal song to Nightwish. Sigh.

The Prodigy - Hot Ride
8.2/10

Quote:
RIP Smogon.

This took a similar trajectory as Pidge's song. I kinda hated it at first, what with that incessant noise going on in the background. The more you listen, however, the less noticeable it becomes, and the rest of the song is quality. Will say that it's much better without headphones (again, the background **** becomes much more noticable). Probably 9+ if it doesn't do the Thing.

Britta Persson - Meet a Bear
8.5/10

Quote:
Any song in 6/8 time is OK in my book. This is another one where interesting vocals over a solid alt rock base works out quite well. Overall a really nice song to jam to.

Also, Britta Persson is the most absurdly Scandinavian name I've ever seen in real life.

Quote:
This song just has an incredible vibe. It's super catchy and I just love how stylish it is. And I've said this for the last god knows how many submissions, but her voice is great too. Spoiler alert: I really like the vocals on all the top finishers. Turns out good vocals can make a song good. Who knew?

Oh man. The sheer raw energy I'm feeling here is incredible. I can't even really say much else about it. It's just a ridiculously powerful song, and it's something I really enjoy. Running out of steam on writeup #34 out of 35. Wish me luck on the last one lmao

I pretty much knew this was the winner from first listen. Didn't disappoint.

Is this song edgy? I feel like it probably qualifies as edgy. I don't really care though, it's ****ing great. Really dig the guitar work, the energy isn't QUITE what Manasi's brought but it's up there and it supplements it with an all around great song. Good ****, IAWY. Good ****.

Scoring:

Raw scores will be translated into points - for example, if you earned a 7 for your song, you get 7 points.

Bonus points are awarded in the following situations:
PODIUM - 3 points for first, 2 for second, 1 for third
EXCELLENCE - 3 points for earning a score of 10, 2 for earning a 9+, 1 for earning an 8+

Finally, prior to category 8, I'll be awarding 1 PITY POINT to a song in each category - essentially, this will be the song I feel I undervalued the most at the time, but which has grown in hindsight.

That being said, the following are the current scores, with bonus points already applied:

Oh, and Category 2, MEDIA CULTURE, will be revealed Sunday, May 28th at 8 PM CDT. Be there or be square.

Marilyn Monroe - The River Of No Return (from The River Of No Return)

Quote:
Snore. This is the kind of song that plays in a half-deserted Luby’s in Podunk, Texas at 4 in the afternoon, right in the middle of the dinner rush because the average age of the patrons is old enough to remember when this movie first came out. I’m there, too, sitting in the corner, halfheartedly pushing lukewarm macaroni and cheese around with my fork, wondering what sort of life decisions led me to this point. An octogenarian wearing a confederate flag t-shirt pushes past my table, his tray stacked high with mashed potatoes and approximately a gallon of gravy. A little bit drips onto my mac and cheese. A single tear drips down my cheek. Marilyn launches into the second chorus.

mrgice3 - Now We Are Free Super Theme Song (from Gladiator)

Quote:
Does a mashup of three songs off a film’s score count under the category? I dunno. I’m not going to catfail it, though, because it’s not even worth it. This is almost as boring as the previous song and approximately 80 times as long. If this massive orchestra we’ve got sitting around would actually do something, we might have a song on our hands. But they just go up and down, up and down, like the value of the Euro during Brexit. The vague Latin chanting, while actually topical for once, isn’t doing it any favors. I might actually fall asleep.
