settlers of catan on asobrain - Page 6 - Puzzles and Other Games Forum

Hi,

I have played this game maybe once (about two years ago). I'm going to be playing it tonight and I need a 5-10 minute crash course so that I don't suck. I will have the rules explained to me so I don't need to know those, but I want some general strategies that I can use throughout the game

as a poker analogy stuff like

"don't bluff"

"don't bet into someone that raised you preflop"

"always raise the pot"

is good enough; i don't need anything high level

your placement is a mix of trying to get all 5 colors and as good numbers as possible

if you have a choice between 2 spots and the numbers are close go with color balance, if they are far apart take the numbers and plan to trade if you have to

cities and dev cards are good so value rock slightly more all things equal (of course better make sure you have wheat)

what are peoples thoughts on trading in this game?

when playing live with 4 players it really annoys me. slows the game down a lot, and i just don't see a big benefit to it, especially when it's not your turn. easily run the risk of losing the beneficial cards before it is your turn and you can actually put them to use.

Does anybody know of an online Catan site that provides "game histories" that would let you review your game afterward and look for leaks, ect?

I'm hovering about 1150 - 1200 ELO on Catan Universe and don't think I can really improve further by just playing more games...

From what I can infer; the players with 1200 - 1500 ELO are often "brick and mortar" tournament players who build up their skills by having much more time to analyse initial placements, ect.

I guess I could do a screen recording of my play, but proper game histories (or some other replay ability) would be better.
