also, a hot take: Emperor Tomato Ketchup by Stereolab is one of the top 10 albums of all-time, start to finish. Was just listening to it again yesterday and it is fantabulous.

Category #4 - Changing Sounds or Repeat, Repeat

Submit a song that undergoes a change in style. As in, it's a song and all of a sudden the sound changes and it sounds like a completely different song, but it's still the same song! The more jarring the style change, the better.

Or...

Submit a song that features features features a good amount of repetition.

In 19th,

Jmurder3 submits Polyhymnia by Scott McMillan

Score: 6.1

Quote:
Very flashy. I'm still not sure if I straight up dislike songs that have too much flashiness in them but I know this song could use a little less of it.

In 18th,

TheYoungBasedGod submits Invalid Litter Dept. by At The Drive-In

Score: 6.6

Quote:
Most of this song is pretty mediocre for me. Both the verses and choruses could be more interesting. Thought piano bits were decent. Last minute of the song definitely was the best part, but still wasn't too special itself.

Score: 6.9

I guess this song is alright when I focus on it but it has a pretty tough time keeping my attention throughout the entire thing.

4maskwolf submits Baba Yetu by Christopher Tin

Score: 7.1

Quote:
I'm a usually a fan of choirs, so I think that helps this song for me. On the other hand, I find the sound of it a little cheesy. Again, it's probably the whole 'uplifting' mood thing.

In 14th,

NeedMoreManasi submits Sound of Silver by LCD Soundsystem

Score: 7.2

Quote:
Some pretty dope bass and percussion sections in this song. Aside from that, good but not great.

In 14th,

Gadarene submits What Time Is Love (USA LP Mix) by The KLF

Score: 7.2

Quote:
That's quite the change in sound. Liked the second part's instrumentation, the vocals less so. Should've had more super high synth.

In 13th,

Weatherguy submits Uncontrollable Urge

Score: 7.3 (8.3, 1-point deduction)

Quote:
Really goofy song. I've always really liked the fast repetitive nature of the instruments leading up to the part with the ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya. 2:30 onward goofiness increases and makes the song better.

In 12th,

soah submits Deliverance (Live) by Opeth

Score: 7.4

Quote:
For some reason, I find myself tuning occasionally for like the first 6 minutes of this song. It's not till we hit that 6-minute mark where I actually start paying attention and hear some nice prog metal. Cool outro.

In 11th,

Dave submits Piano Loco by DJ Luck & MC Neat

Score: 7.4 (7.9, 0.5-point deduction)

Quote:
Kinda felt like giving you a deduction because this is one of those songs that while it is a little repetitive, it's something you don't really notice. Anyway, fun song that has the piano bringing most of it. Dibidibidibidibidibi.

In 10th,

Walrein submits Reset by Mutemath

Score: 7.6 (8.1, 0.5-point deduction)

Quote:
Again, unless I'm specifically looking out for it, I don't notice too much that this is repetitive. Anyway, took me a while to realize how kinda cool this instrumental was. Definitely a grower for me. Drums deserve praise. Also, lots of reverb here and I really like reverb.

In 9th,

CrimsonFox submits We Have Heaven by Yes

Score: 8.0

Quote:
First, great category fit. I've always preferred these sort of vocals where different melodies are being sung simultaneously rather than harmonies - you just don't come across it as often. Feel-good song does make me feel good.

Score: 8.1

Quote:
Self-aware repetitive song. Really digging that whole 'fly in your ear' buzzing sound found here among other interesting sounds. I don't get the whole spelling section but whatever.

In 6th,

Owner Of A Lonely Heart submits Fear & Delight by The Correspondents

Score: 8.4

Quote:
This had the potential to score higher if it had a better chorus because I loved the verses and that style change at 1:40. Enjoyed how the song tried to be dark but fun.

In 6th,

rtspurs submits The Soft Parade by The Doors

Score: 8.4

Quote:
This song is definitely a trip and I never really feel bored while listening. Jim Morrison's voice is great as usual. However, that shift at 1:30 was definitely the best part of the trip so Jim lied to me later. Wish that section had lasted a bit longer.

Score: 8.8

Quote:
Once again you submit a song where I feel lost. This time in sorrow rather than darkness. Not intensely as the last one but still a good amount. Definitely a good song to put on when you're feeling down and want something to reflect your mood. The transition at 2:50 is amazing.
