I changed up scoring stuff because I can, btw.

Update

Scoring:
  • Songs will be scored from 0-10.
  • Bonus points of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 points will be given to top 5 songs for a category.
  • If I'm familiar with a song you submit, there will be a 1.0 point deduction.
  • There will be some sort of point reduction depending on how much a submitted song doesn't fit the category.
  • At the end, players' song scores will be totaled and biggest total is winnar.

Category #1 - Vocal Carry

Submit a song with amazing vocals that are the highlight of the song. The vocals don't necessarily have to be the kind that would win a singing competition. Just awesome, passionate, whatever. For this category only, no vocals that are primarily spoken word, rap, or screaming/growling. I want actual singing.

In 19th,

Owner Of A Lonely Heart submits Hakanaku Tsuyoku by Younha

Score: 5.9

Quote:
I like her voice quite a bit. I think the actual song itself isn't up to par though. It could have done with a much better instrumental.

In 18th,

Weatherguy submits Too Close by Alex Clare

Score: 6.5

Quote:
Oh, it's the song. You know, I listen to this and I find that the singing isn't too bad... And neither is the instrumental during the verses. But I think it's the chorus' wub wub that knocks this down lower than it would be otherwise.

nice, Owner. Sounds like something I'd hear at the end of an anime.

In 17th,

Jmurder3 submits Turning Daisies by Krister Linder

Score: 6.7

Quote:
I really liked this the first time I listened to it. And then I started to get annoyed with the airiness of his singing on subsequent listens. The vocalising bits were pretty cool though.

yeah it's trying to be blues but then it does that modern pop stuff on the chorus

In 15th,

Gadarene submits I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got by Bettye Lavette

Score: 7.0

Quote:
Well, what you haven't got is an instrumental and I do want that -cries-. The singing is great but I'm only allowed to imagine how much better it would sound if it had something else to support it. On the other side, no instrumental means those slight imperfections of the voice are much more apparent and they're endearing in a way.

In 15th,

TheYoungBasedGod submits 99 Luftballoons by Nena

Score: 7.0

Quote:
So I've actually known this song existed for a long time but never actually listened to it till now. Very 80s and I actually like 80s music despite all the corniness the era had. This is just good and nothing more.

I need to get on a computer so I can listen to these submissions, bc the links don't work via the phone app

(Which is the fault of the app, to be clear)

In 14th

Godorene submits Dancing by Låpsley

Score: 7.2

Quote:
This is a case where the song has elements of stuff I really like, but it couldn't quite do them the exact way I like it. The vocals were fine for the most part. It was the drone notes I couldn't love for some reason. That loud buzzy part was the highlight for me and it's a shame it was so short.

In 13th,

CrimsonFox submits Where Do All My Friends Go? by Oingo Boingo

Score: 7.3

Quote:
Yes, the singing is good and on point here. So I feel like I should like this more than I do, but I'm kinda stuck giving it this score. It might just be the chorus that I'm not totally in love with.

Needs more music for me but nice and moody

In 12th,

Walrein submits Philosopher by San Fermin

Score: 7.4

Quote:
The background vocalising here is really nice. Horns were super dope. I think this could have gotten a bit more points had they not messed with sound quality of the vocals. Not that I mind that sort of stuff, but I don't think it was pulled off well here.

This will be really interesting to see the reveals because I realized in putting together my entries that I actually had no real idea what kind of music would resonate with Roman

In 10th,

Bloobird submits Baboon (Live) by The Mountain Goats

Score: 7.5

Quote:
Good emotional delivery here. Quiet verse > Loud verse, imo. I think the quiet verse was the exact right of quiet it needed to be, but the loud verse didn't get quite as loud as I would have liked.

In 10th,

gbsfranca submits Show Me Love by Hundred Waters

Score: 7.5

Quote:
Really pleasant to listen to. I realise it's an album opener, but for the sake of critiquing here, obviously it needed more variation to score any higher.

I think I faltered a little on the choice but I think I've used several of the better ones and also didn't want to choose too well known of a song.

That track has that nice harmony blend. The verses (or whatever they are) do get a bit repetitive but where the song takes off is the bridge areas. The "My indication..." etc Both the song and the vocal take off even more.

lol. This is the only Kate Bush song I'm really familiar and I think it's great. Her voice and this song are pretty goofy, but it still makes me smile.

Zack submits Two-Headed Boy by Neutral Milke Hotel

Score: 7.7 (8.7, 1-point deduction)

Quote:
I already loved this song. There's something really endearing about the combination of a stripped down song with vocals coming from a singer that sounds like he loves to sing rather than trying to sound good doing it.
