It was such a weird random dream.
New goal: make this reality and convince MarkK he can dream the future.

I just got back from taking my dog to the vet. We thought she might be getting arthritis in her knees, but xrays revealed something really unexpected and really bad, and I'm devastated. To fix it would be almost unjustifiably expensive, I need to figure out what I'm going to do. I love my ****ing dog, you guys.. I can't deal.

They took x-rays for her knees but in the x-rays they also show the hips. The vet found a pretty severe genetic deformity in her hip sockets, and this has led to severe dysplasia. Even he was surprised at how horrible it is; my dog is only 7 years old. She needs complete double hip replacements, and she's in pain. The vet said the only reason she isn't already showing lameness is because she's young and I've been so militant about maintaining a lean weight for her. But without the surgery, its not a matter of if she will go fully lame, its more a matter of when. And the when would be fairly soon. If she goes lame, she won't be able to stand or walk or go to the bathroom on her own, and her quality of life would be terrible..

The surgery would cost close to 5 figures or maybe in the low five figures. It also carries the risk she could die on the table or reject the implants or get an infection.. But the surgery would fix the issue completely and she would be able to live longer and be healthy and not in any pain. My vet doesn't do this surgery, I'd have to go to a specialist in Raleigh. The good news is that because I keep her so lean, she wouldn't have to go on a waiting list, she could just get right in there.

I've had her since she was only a few weeks old. I found her at a kill shelter in Vegas and I just love this dog so much.. Like bargain with God kind of love. She's my best friend, I love her probably as much as I love my two human best friends.. I don't know what I'm going to do, I'm so so sad.

That sucks so bad. Sorry to hear that. It's an expensive surgery, but worth it for another 7+ years of the love and joy that she gives you.

that's awful cross, i'm so sorry, i don't know what i would do if it was my own dog
11-07-2016 , 05:33 PM
really sorry crossnerd.

one piece of info is i wouldn't completely trust the vet that your dog won't have any pain if the surgery goes well. my friend had a hip replacement that went well, and it's not ideal living a life with a hip replacement.

another piece of info is that im certain your dog has had a wonderful 7 years thanks to you. and that counts for a lot, no matter what happens.

Good point. Crossnerd, don't ever forget this.

Thanks guys

I'm going to take her for a second opinion. I think if it turns out that surgery is really the best thing we should do and other therapies wouldn't be effective, then we'll get the surgery. I've worked really hard on my new business and I'm lucky enough to be in a position to afford it. I'll take her to the best damn dog hip replacement surgeon in the country. I know its probably stupid but she means the world to me..
