- Got upgraded on our first flight to plus class and were treated like celebrities for 9 hours
- Got to Vancouver for a layover and tried some salmon jerky (would not recommend)
- Hawaii won't let you on a bus with a suitcase and so when we moved from a hotel in the south to an apartment in the north we had to get an $85 uber
- There are wild chickens everywhere in Hawaii it seems
- Swam with a turtle in turtle bay
- Went to Alcatraz and thought it was pretty great (lots of birds there)
- Went to Lombard Street and thought how much of a nightmare it would be to live near there with all the tourists standing in the middle of the road
- Went to Castro to see the Harvey Milk stuff which was cool
- Lots of homeless in Castro asking for money and looking in the trash for food. The wife couldn't finish her lunch so we had it boxed up and planned to give it to some guy without a house, but there are none to be found. Ended up leaving it on the top of a trash can for someone to hopefully find.
- Have been to Vegas before but the wife hasn't. I'd told her how crazy it was but she didn't fully understand until she saw a few dozen slot machines at baggage reclaim in the airport.
- We went to see cirque du soleil mystere which was great. Someone I work with and his wife were a couple of rows behind us (small world)
- Played some 9am poker while the wife slept and it was full of old people and very questionable play. Didn't win since it was a crapshoot after the first hour but I got chatting to some old geezers and drank more than my buy in's worth in the form of White Russians. Old guy to one side of me was Canadian and his son in law was a pilot, old guy on my other side of me is from the same city as me and recognised me from our local casino (small world)
- Went to the grand canyon and it was spectacular as always. The skywalk and the western town were now complete (last time I was there which was 10 years ago they were under construction).
- Went on a paddle steamer down the mighty Mississippi. Had lunch, listened to live jazz and listened to a guy narrate in a voice so soothing that it would make Morgan Freeman sound rough.
- Went to Bourbon Street and it was busy as hell in the middle of the day. Would not want to go there for Mardi Gras as it would be unbearable carnage I'm sure.
- Had a great 3 course meal at The Gumbo Shop consisting of gumbo, shrimp etouffee and a praline sundae.
- Went to some the Blue Nile and Spotted Cat to see some jazz in a non touristy setting, but it still felt touristy. (New Orleans is the place we went to that I least want to go back to, but it was still good).
- New York threw everything at us to try to make us miss our trip to the Crown of the Statue of Liberty, but we fought back and made it. There were out of order metro machines, closed subway stations, changes to routes which cut out our stop. We flagged down a taxi for the last few blocks and made it by the skin of our teeth.
- Having crown and pedestal access makes you feel like a celebrity on Liberty Island. You see people queue up asking if they can get in and they are told they need to book way in advance. There are even those who have pedestal access only and get only a fraction of the way up and it's really cramped there. With crown access you get all the way to the top and we were the only ones there then. Just the two of us and a 2 park rangers who took our photo. It's much smaller than you'd imagine, but a fun experience.
- We went to the MoMA the next day and spent a few hours there. It was really interesting to find out a bunch of analysis about things which can seemingly have little meaning (like white on white) and to see a bunch of the famous pictures (starry night, melty clocks etc)
