I enjoyed the April Pub, so I think I'll subscribe for May. Good thing these are free subscriptions.

In other news, I may need a sounding board:

For those of you who entered my sheep, you know I'm a teacher. I got an email from my principal asking for a sit down about a report card comment I wrote.

Sad thing is that I try to write a unique comment for all of my students, because I have a different connection with each student. Many were good, a bunch were average, some were rough, but a few were legit bad. I looked back, and I can't even figure out which kid it's about.

I don't know what I'm expecting here. Anyone been called down to HR?

I'm often worried about these sorts of things.
But always find that as long as I've acted with good professional judgement it's never that bad.

And often people just need clarity / confirmation of your good intentions.

I mean, I'm assuming you didn't write anything that would be overtly stupid, right?

sounds like you need a lawyer

I'm usually very positive and spin everything in a positive way. I'm a mostly positive and upbeat person. I don't know if I was in a pissy mood or whatever.

I think I wrote: "xxxx isn't working hard enough. I know xxxx will work harder when he takes the class again next year."

If that's not the one, there are a few others that are pretty negative.
05-02-2017 , 09:23 PM
I mean, that's certainly not the best thing that I've ever heard a teacher say about a student.

But at this point in the semester (can't be much more than a few weeks left right) the truth is really what is important.
If the parents don't like it, I think they are most likely just trying to hide from the truth and want their little baby to pass because 'he's a good kid'.

I think you're fine.
05-02-2017 , 09:40 PM
I think I'm fine too. Thanks for the feedback and reassurance. I appreciate it. I'll update you when I get a chance tomorrow.

My dad was a teacher, retired in mid 00s. Right around the time when schools everywhere started going mega-fascist about everything. Literally every assignment had to be marked with a "rubric" with each score accompanied by something like "exceeds expectations" "matches expectations" "below expectations" and/or other comments. They are trying to remove basically every aspect of professional judgement and turn it into a robotic formula job like burger flipping. It sucks. Do people with kids in the upper grades today find this? I've been out of school since around then so I don't know.

A little different topic but along this same line: I find the current direction that high school curriculums are taking to be a little concerning. The explosion of AP/honors classes and the ratcheting up of the workload. Damn, my sophomore son has almost zero free time. Play a sport, take a competitive class schedule and your free time is gone.

I remember having just tons of free time during my HS years.

Next year, they are introducing AP classes available at the freshman level (AP World Geography). Geez.

And you can't just slack either. If you want to get into a competitive university, you need to keep up with the Jones...

End rant.

I kinda wish I'd had AP type stuff. They got rid of it like 10 years before i went to high school, and then brought it back about 5 years after I graduated. I think it would've been more interesting, I was definitely in a few classes that were easy and boring in grades 11-12.

when i went to public school in the 80s, i had tons of free time, though i didn't study. but even if i did do the work i still would have lots of free time. then i switched to a prestigious high school and the workload was ridic. after baseball practice i'd get home about 6, and had legit 4+ hours homework every night.

recently some mom wrote a note to her daughter's 5th grade teacher. she said her daughter was done with homework. she posted the note on fb, and it got a zillion shares.

i think homework is mostly bs

I was graded like this before the mid-00s and I can assure you that it did nothing to restrict a teacher's ability to give out whatever grade they wanted to any and every student. I had a teacher who never gave me better than a B- on anything I wrote all year (and that was on a paper where she couldn't find a single thing to quibble about) while the girls in the class got an A on everything, or maybe a B+ if they really botched it. I was the only one in that class who passed the AP exam.

i forget who it was who said they would start watching Bosch, and gave me a backhanded compliment at the same time.

i'm curious if you started watching it, or if anyone else here watched it.

i just finished the latest season. really good show!

I took a bunch of AP classes and they don't really change the fact that high school is a joke.

however, as I've gotten older and had more experience with classes with little homework or a lot of homework, I've realized that for classes that are skill-based more than knowledge-based (iow, classes based on math), homework is invaluable

A lot of the standardization is essentially like a lot of regulation overall - it's a cost to the best/average, but serves (hopefully) to raise the very lowest of the low/weed out the really shocking stuff. Like regulated poker probably actually makes Pokerstars a worse experience, but the goal isn't to do that, it's to try to prevent Absolute Poker. Marking rubrics and similar quality assurance rules in education are often like that - they make me somewhat worse at what I do, but hopefully they are a means for preventing some of the ****ty teachers from being so ****ty.

The other thing they are, is a response to larger volumes/workloads.

In other news, I caught two examples of plagiarism yesterday. That's a horrible experience for all involved.
05-03-2017 , 06:41 AM
horrible? really? that seems a bit extreme. i'd think it'd be just like "you cheated. you got caught. we'll figure out the consequences"

i'd guess they don't care that much. it seems to me if they really cared, they wouldn't have plagiarized

Don't know how it goes for kokiri, but if my wife catches someone cheating and they don't admit to it, it's a long obnoxious process.
