I looked into the uk security services' maths section but decided 1) I probably wasn't right for it and 2) it would be a bit like being someone's computer.

I also know of a few people who had a nod and a wink for MI5/6 but none ever admitted to going for an interview. I guess the ones who end up as spies aren't the ones who talk about it.

Part of me always regrets not being a bit more diligent as an undergraduate and therefore probably doing a doctorate in maths, but at the same time another part of me feels like I went far enough down that rabbit hole of obscurity. I love the pureness of pure maths, and it really taught me how to think, but I'm not sure I could really do it full time

funny story. i was not the most diligent undergrad and my GPA from that time reflects it. but with a few years out in the world, I figured out that I wanted to be a researcher and that even the non-academic jobs I wanted were Ph.D prefered. so, i did a masters both to get my academic cred in order and to help focus on an initial set of research questions. i talked myself into applying mostly to top 10 and top 15 type programs (which i was really regretting a couple of days ago when I only had 2 rejections in hand) but it has now worked out.
