If $800 is all you lost, consider it a fair price for what you learned. I once paid $900 to learn that blackjack is the devil and I consider that lesson worth it.
Also, you're not the first person to be blinded by wishful thinking. It happens.
At first, I thought Erin sounded bad with the ultimatum thing, but $50k/year is not an unreasonable expectation at all.
No one else can tell you what to do here. On one hand, I've always believed in the importance of pursuing your passion, but you need to find a way to make a living too. If you can find a way to make money from music, that would be ideal but if not, you might need to compromise and get a "day job" kind of career to pay the bills while pursuing your music interests in your free time. That's pretty much what I have to do: pursue a less important (to me) career while writing my books on the side.
