Someone talk me off a ledge. We just got our AP Test Scores. WTF?!?!?!!? I've been teaching AP Statistics for 3 years now (after teaching Not-AP Statistics for about 8 years), and I know I've been doing a better job each year.

If you don't know, the AP Test is scored from 1-5 (5 being the best). The test is really hard, but you only need about a 65% to score a 5, 50% to score a 4, 40% for a 3, and 30% for a 2.

Year 1 (24 students)
1: 20.8%
2: 37.5%
3: 33.3%
4: 4.2%
5: 4.2%
Mean: 2.333

Year 2 (52 students)
1: 44.2%
2: 13.5%
3: 17.3%
4: 17.3%
5: 7.7%
Mean: 2.308

Year 3 (70 students)
1: 64.3%
2: 21.4%
3: 12.9%
4: 1.4%
5: 0.0%
Mean: 1.514

In year 1, I was very unclear about the points of emphasis in the grading, so I understand the lack of student success. In year 2, enrollment increased, therefore average quality of student went down, so I understand the decrease in means from 2.333 to 2.308. From years 2 to 3, again, enrollment increased more, and the average quality of student decreased more, but 1.514? I don't get it.

Why so many more students each year?

Is it possible you just have too many students (i.e. a bunch that really shouldn't be taking AP Stats)?

A bunch of them should definitely NOT be taking this course. That said, once they are there, it's up to me to get them ready. Also, Stats isn't nearly as difficult as AP Calc. Other than the usual mean, median, and mode, students are starting from scratch and have to learn the new content, which is new, not super difficult.

Is it possible that this type of thinking will lead to worse outcomes?

If you're spending considerable effort trying to getting your 1s to a 2 or 3, is that taking away from the effort you can spend getting your 2s and 3s to 4s and 5s?

Keep in mind that I have no experience teaching when asking these questions. So apologies if these questions are super naive.

Very good questions.

I'm trying to help students increase all scores. Students effort, work, and abilities are at different levels from year to year. I connect with students at different rates each year, too.

This year's crop was challenging, to say the least.

That said, going from 2.333 to 2.308 is reasonable. I expected the mean to be in the 2.275 area.

1.514 is unfathomable. Like I said about my students' scores to another AP teacher this morning, "I would call mine Abysmal, but I think I just offended everything abysmal."

How are the students graded?

Seems to me if you say at the outset that your grade will be determined solely by your performance on the test, then you will probably get rid of a large fraction of the students who are taking it because they think they should.

(You can argue about the merits of having a grade based solely on the test, but as I understand it, that's kinda the point of an AP class, isn't it?)

But aren't the tests calibrated so that the same percentage of people pass in each category? Pretty sure that's how it was when I was in school.

In my AP classes we were given questions from previous AP exams for practice (or maybe they were just invented to resemble typical questions from AP exams) and we were graded in the same way. Actually, I think we were only given the hard questions. Because I remember the actual AP exams being really easy compared to what we were prepared for.

If only there was an AP statistics teacher around to analyze that data...

AB exam was super easy. BC exam was super hard. Regardless, I think 2 people in both my calc classes got less than a 5.

I think you're confusing the 4th of July with Columbus Day. Or at least conflating them. Sorry you're triggered though.

Edit: If they don't have bigass fireworks displays on Columbus Day I'm going to start a petition.
