Yes. That was the point I tried to make in my last post. She seems like an airhead, so I'd make sure (politely) that she understands that leaving behind valuable property with a stranger is an airhead move and that she should put an emphasis on rectifying the situation because she's imposing on you and possession is nine tenths of the law. What she's doing is really rude.
I forget which state you said that you're in but I believe that each state offers free legal advice to tenants, and it might not hurt to a look at that. (I suggest this just because you seem really unsure of yourself, so at minimum this might help you to feel more comfortable with whatever you decide.)
