Stay at The Grand Amsterdam on Haarlemmerstraat, walk next door to the Green House, then stumble around the corner to Rene's. If you're still hungry, hit the shawarma place next to Rene's.

Buy joy

Wow, a fine dining discussion; more stuff to add to the list, it seems.

Needless to say your ability (and will, truthfully) to spend that kind of money on a night out is lessened once/if you have kids, though.

Xnerd, thanks for the Amsterdam recs! I was thinking about typing up some stuff about my weekend in Berlin later, but in case I get too lazy, the following places are all phenomenal and people should go there:

Twinpigs (bar in Neukölln; great and relaxed neighborhood-y atmosphere; beer and cocktails -- get the Boulevard Bask -- and what seemed like a tasty food menu)

Industry Standard (restaurant in Neukölln; kinda polarizing but the composition of its dishes both confused me and made me really, really happy; one of the most memorable and positive dining experiences in a while; I sent my gf a drunk text during this dinner where I said something like, "the food at Industry Standard is making me reevaluate what I think I know about taste," which sounds weird and hipstery or whatever but i dunno, man, the stuff i had was so good in such a different way than most things -- the people there are also super-friendly, especially if you sit at the counter)

Tier (bar in Kreuzberg; cocktails; gets quite crowded and smoky at peak hours but the drinks are A+)

Lode & Stijn (restaurant in Kreuzberg or just across the canal from Kreuzberg, idk; modern and seasonal Dutch-German food; lovely people and spot-on wine pairings)

Rutz Winebar (restaurant/bar in Mitte; the restaurant is Michelin-starred but I didn't go there...I just sat at the bar a couple of times and had some snacks while drinking amazing wine. the somm (Christoph) and the other bartender (Janine) were the nicest people ever and gave me tons of recommendations for the city)

Pauly Bar at Pauly Saal (restaurant/bar in Mitte; another Michelin-starred place where I just hung out at the bar, which is in a separate part of the space, and didn't actually eat much -- this place was the highlight of my trip, because all three of the bartenders are awesome and warm people who i just really clicked with, and i ended up foregoing plans to explore different bars just so i could stay there for a few hours on multiple occasions and shoot the **** with them about booze and travel and life and other stuff. the drinks are on ****ing point, too. i want a bar like that with people like that in DC -- Suq, know of any place? miss them already. but yeah, people living in, or traveling to, Berlin need to make this bar one of their stops.)

Having kids has to be amongst the worst life enjoyment choices.

Good to know I've got a few months left to enjoy life. Sitting 3rd row next to the Twins dugout tonight should help.

i love food about as much as anyone. i honestly think i have a mild eating disorder. its very hard for me to stop eating. i eat myself sick about 4 times a week. so ldo i love me some super fancy food. but i love good plain food i cook myself about 90% as much. like every bite takes me into a world of pleasure. and it cost about $3-$30 for a huge meal.

How much pleasure do you get from $75 in delivered Chinese food?

my top five high-end dining experiences, off the top of my head

1) Dill in Reykjavik (April 2015). A bartender in Berlin this weekend excitedly high-fived me when he learned I'd been there; he said he'd been last January and could still remember every dish. Phenomenal food. There was a series of five or six dishes in the middle where each one was the best thing I'd had in recent memory, and they kept topping each other.

2) Disfrutar in Barcelona (April 2016). Wow. Everything was modern and playful and absolutely packed with complex flavor, but what elevated the whole experience was the warmth of the service. The sommelier, who was the sister of the chef, was so enthusiastic about each wine she was serving that she single-handedly would have left us with good memories even if the food had been less delicious; it's like she was letting us in on this great secret every time she poured us a new glass.

3) Central in Lima (September 2014). Amazing, amazing, amazing. South America has so many fruits and vegetables and plants that you rarely see anywhere else, and this restaurant uses them in conjunction with refined techniques and a mastery of flavor profiles to create something legit special. (Here's their current menu, to give you an idea.) They also did this non-alcoholic drink pairing with housemade juices, infusions, and extracts that was soooo tasty and cool.

4) Volt in Maryland (April 2010). I've heard it's gone slightly downhill since the chef has focused on other ventures, but it was crazy delicious when we went. We did the Table 21 thing where you sat in the kitchen, and both the service and the food was immaculate. Really great experience.

5) Momofuku Ko in NYC (September 2012). This was before they moved spaces, when they were still a narrow little counter with twelve seats. My gf got reservations for their lunch service (which was a longer meal than their dinner), so we took the bus up to New York for the day. Incredible food.

Honorable mentions in this category include Sushi Ichikawa in Tokyo (August 2015), where the chef-owner and his wife opened up the restaurant just for us on a Sunday and we were the only ones there; the omakase counter at Sushi Taro in DC (six or seven times), which imo is easily the best high-end dining experience in town; and a collaboration dinner at now-defunct Suna in DC (January 2013), featuring five insanely talented powerhouse chefs putting together a one-night-only menu.

Now I'm hungry.
Damn, Gad seems to know his food.

Now I'm really annoyed I forgot about his Prague restaurant recommendation.

Many of those were less expensive than I was expecting.

koko, as your attorney I am advising you that your posting style is being shamelessly stolen by US news outlets:

Take a look at what's happened in the last 24 hours:
  • In a Washington Post interview, Trump declined to endorse House Speaker Paul Ryan against his primary challenger
  • He reiterated that he hasn't endorsed Sen. John McCain and said the onetime prisoner of war "has not done a good job for the vets"
  • He slapped out at Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte, saying "she has given me zero support"
  • He suggested that Americans should pull their 401(k) funds out of the stock market
  • He said he's "always wanted" to receive a Purple Heart but that having one gifted to him by a supporter was "much easier"
  • He said that the handling of sexual harassment has "got to be up to the individual"
  • He accused Khizr Khan of being "bothered" by his plan to keep terrorists out of the country, and said that he had no regrets about his clash with the family
  • He appeared to feud with a crying baby during a rally
  • He reiterated that "if the election is rigged, I would not be surprised"
  • The sitting president of the United States publicly called Trump "unfit to serve" and urged Republicans to withdraw their support for him.
  • Trump spokesman Katrina Pierson suggested that Obama and Clinton are to blame for the death of Humayan Khan, who died in 2004, when neither were in the executive branch at the time
  • An ally of Paul Manafort told our colleague John Harwood at CNBC that the campaign chairman is "mailing it in," leaving the rest of the staff "suicidal."
  • Sitting GOP congressman Richard Hanna, HP head Meg Whitman and former Christie aide Maria Comella all said they plan to vote for Hillary Clinton
  • The Washington Post released a transcript of its full interview with Trump, indicating among other things that he paused five times to watch TV coverage in the middle of the sit-down
  • A GOP source told NBC's Katy Tur that Reince Priebus is "apoplectic" over Trump's refusal to endorse Ryan and is making calls to the campaign to express his "extreme displeasure"

What are we missing? Any one of these items would be problematic on a normal campaign day. This all happened since 8am yesterday.

I'll start with Boneless Spare Ribs, followed by Roast Pork Le Mein (Vegetable Lo Mein if wifey joins me), Steamed Broccoli with Shrimp, House Seafood Soup, Sweet & Sour Chicken, and $25 of fortune cookies.

Also, to the food point:

When I was at my firm in NY I would have at least 3-4 meals a year at Le Bernadin (or, as we called it, "Bernie's Fish Shack"). And I don't even like seafood really. They were consistently amazing.

i'm all about looking for the value, even/especially in a relative sense (and getting annoyed when i feel like something isn't worth what it costs, as is the case for many high-end restaurants and for much of DC's food scene)

and for my cool-restaurants-at-more-reasonable-cost-but-holy-****-this-food-and-overall-experience-is-so-good list, i'd start with
  • La Pubilla in Barcelona
  • Industry Standard in Berlin, mentioned above
  • Parachute in Chicago
  • Ganchan in Tokyo (ridiculous yakitori)
  • Pig and Khao in NYC
  • Tail Up Goat here in DC (maybe on a slightly lower rung, since it's more expensive and the food isn't quite as revelatory as the rest, but the service and friendliness is unparalleled)
  • a few dozen places in Portland
