how far in advance do you have to book joel or any of the top tier restaurants in vegas?

Bloo, I'm super-envious about Fat Duck -- I have Heston Blumenthal's two Perfection books as coffee table reading

gonna be in Copenhagen in a few weeks and though I probably won't eat at noma, I do have reservations at Geranium, which many people hold in very high regard. excited for it.

expensive meals are good but i can never get over the mental barrier of how expensive they are and how much more efficiently i could be spending that money

also any little thing that goes wrong at all stresses me out and i see things going wrong that are probably nothing

Same. Having dinner at a friend's that can cook well is much more enticing than a crazy expensive meal out for me. Not that I wouldn't enjoy it and I do hope to be able to go to a world class restaurant one day. Pretty much anything that anybody spends more money on than what the 'usual' costs is going to be looked at as funny by those outside the circle of people who understand or enjoy said thing. No reason to give anybody a hard time for spending their money.

You sound like my girlfriend.

When we were in London in like 2007, you had to race on the phone lines the minute The Fat Duck opened a new set of dates.

And that restaurant in Spain that's now shut ran a lottery iirc.

it's only like one buyin.

i thought you people took pride in your sensible queueing manners.

I think there's also a huge difference between doing something that's just inherently expensive, and doing something that is expensive because it is outside the norm.

I'd love to do a fancy meal if I felt I had the coin to spend on it. Don't think that'll happen for 5-7 years though.

I've been to all of the top rated restaurants in my current town (in the top 5 according to local publication), only ever had one meal go over a hundred bucks, and walked away happy as **** every time. I continuously get terrible service by this one waiter at my favorite Jamaican joint, and yesterday I told him that he was my favorite waiter. He legit did not even change his facial expression and just said 'thank you' before walking away.

I don't think the expensive meals thing is that crazy. Its a matter of preference what a person enjoys enough to deem worthy of $$$.

For example, when I board my dog there's a box on the form where you have to write a number for how much the vets are authorized to spend to save your pet in the event of a medical emergency. I always write 10k. I know a lot of people would say that is insane, but I'm the one best suited to decide what I deem worthy of spending money on, and to me, money is for affording things that make my life happier. There are few things in my life that make me happier than my dog, so thats where I'm willing to spend money, even absurd amounts of it.

Same goes for food. You're only going to live once, and not knowing the full scope of how pleasurable food can be is, to me, a tragedy. I encourage everyone to go absolutely nuts and buy themselves a disgustingly expensive meal from a world class chef. Buy things for no other reason than enjoyment. **** the fear of frivolity! Money should be used to buy happiness. You won't be sorry!

I know some of you are buying boring crap too. Save up your boring crap money and buy joy!

A friend of mine lives paycheck to paycheck with absolutely no savings. He went to Vegas and had a meal at é for his birthday. He absolutely loved it and he would tell you it's one of the best decisions he's ever made.

I get that people value things differently and maybe someday I'll be able to take a momentary pause from my view on money and just do something like that. Otherwise I'll just have to wait until I can do that and not have my budget take a hit.

Cocaine is decent and cheap in the US, there's literally no reason not to do it!
