The POG Programmers Containment Thread The POG Programmers Containment Thread

Because people whine when we talk about this ever-so-important topic in the Community Thread, here is where we can discuss such weighty topics as:
  • PHP - real programming language, or the domain of script kiddies and hacks
  • Python - useful, or just for snobs
  • Spaces or tabs, aka, alien identification
  • lol Java
  • This was going to be curly braces, but that issue is firmly decided

I learned some very simple Java game programming when I was 16/17. I haven't worked with it in ~5 years though. I've been considering trying to pick it up again. Is java sort of a dead language now? I'd want to learn something that would at least be useful to me.

PHP: domain of script kiddies and hacks, but I'm still quite fond of it. I did so much seat-of-my-pants development with it over the years.

AMUSING ANECDOTE

we have a product written in c#. when you build the debug release in VS it has a nag message that pops up if you try to use MessageBox without passing in an owner control, something about some ui thread oddness from way back when, or whatever.

The nag dialog says something about "Improperly parented dialog".

One day I'm sitting here happily working away (or surfing 2+2, it's 50/50) and I hear my office mate pipe up with "your MOM is improperly parented!%$#"

I found this amusing.

The end

I didnt mean you had to start a diff thread lol. BTW, I'm gonna try to learn SQL in the next few days/week. bsball told me it was easy and helpful for getting a job so I might have questions.

I basically know nothing as my prior programming experience consists of 1 semester of an Engineering class and MATLAB, limited use of Stata, and SPSS. I doubt the latter two even count.

Longtime Java programmer Ronnie Lloyd of Austin, TX is offended by the thought of people instantiating his private classes. "It's just common sense," said Lloyd, who is 37. "If I buy you a house and put the title in your name, but I mark some of the doors 'Employees Only', then you're not allowed to open those doors, even though it's your house. Because it's really my house, even though I gave it to you to live in."
worst analogy ever?

Wait, it gets worse

Quote:
Pacing and frowning thoughtfully, Lloyd continued: "Even if I go away forever and you live there for 20 years and you know exactly what's behind the doors — heck, even if it's a matter of life and death — plain old common sense still dictates that you're never, ever allowed to open them for any reason."

"It's for your own protection," Lloyd added.
it appears the whole thing was satire......but i shouldnt be expected to understand programmer humor

ya if you are going to pick up a statistical package R and SAS are both better than SPSS and Stata

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm lolling at Java because I only like to type in excess when doing things that really matter, like posting political diatribes in the community thread, and discussing internet text games

I know what it's about but I'm not sure how I feel about it. One one hand, it's open source. Using it is buyer beware and giving it out is, well giving it out. On the other hand, the wiki dudes remind me of graffiti vandals. Messin' with other people's stuff just to be messin' with their stuff. Seems like they could be more productive.

It's an underappreciated but brilliant programming language (even if it's not, really, a programming language)
