There is a paper that I read last night called "Obama's Use of Hidden Hypnosis Techniques in his Speeches" that I found quite interesting.

I have to warn you that the paper isn't perfect- there are a couple parts that need to be re-written, but overall its well written and cites a lot of sources and provides links to a lot of speeches.

Basically it argues that Obama intentionally uses whats called Eriksonian techniques of conversational or covert hypnosis, and this is why there is this "Obama effect" where people basically think Obama is the second coming of Christ, etc

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milton_H._Erickson

I found it all quite fascinating. As an incentive to get people to actually look into this a little, the author of the paper says that these same techniques have been used to pick up women.

Yeah well just like Hitler

You will appreciate this then I think. That first girl can really sing.

I'm trying to look into the similarities between Hitler's techniques and Obama's- but Erikson definitely couldn't have been around and writing in those times, but the Freudian sorts of ideas that its all based on certainly were.

I almost hate to mention Freud since so many people believe that all of his ideas have been discredited, but the more I learn the more I'm brought back to him and even Jung a little.

The one point that I want to stress is that according to the author, what Obama is doing, the techniques that he uses, are not accidental or simply the result of him being a good and passionate speaker. He argues that they are intentionally designed to subvert the conscious mind.

Somehow, when you guys explicitly compare Obama with Hitler I find it endearing instead of irritating.
10-23-2008 , 11:59 PM
Just for the record I've made no such comparison

although I have insinuated that some of their speaking techniques may be similar

Although, anyone who has watched derren brown would have to be pretty scared about what 'hidden hypnotic techinques' can make you do

I saw in that paper that he talks about him. I just started watching some of those videos with him at the dog track collecting money on losing tickets.

Wow.

So I assume you disagree that Obama is using those sorts of techniques?

i downloaded the paper to read it. i looks a bit cranky, but interesting.

without reading it i won;t comment but i would say off the top of my head:
1) do i believe obama is going, 'hahaha, i'll hypnotise people into voting for me'? - no
2) do i think that the natural habits of good speakers like obama probably incorporate a lot of these sorts of techniques? Yes
3) do i think that obama probably consciously develops these techniques? Yes
4) do i think he's alone amongst politicians in doing this? no
5) do i think that political rallies are a good scene for mass hysteria? Yes

Basically: one man's hypnotism is another's techniques for effective communication.

Also Derren Brown is awesome.

his book:
http://www.derrenbrown.co.uk/products/totm

is absolutely fascinating. (Full disclosure, my wife edited it) It's got loads of really interesting info regarding hypnotism and magic tricks in general and a lot of this sort of stuff
10-24-2008 , 04:37 AM
Also, i don't think it's a revalation that obama says a lot of stuff in his speeches which sound good but are pretty much meaningless. TBH, a lot of stuff he says sounds like an advert for a constipation cure to me.
10-24-2008 , 04:41 AM
This whole entire subject is fascinating the **** outta me

also- some of the stuff that Darren Brown is doing can only be explained with the paradigm presented in this book

http://www.amazon.com/Holographic-Un.../dp/0060922583

either that or you have to conclude that the whole thing is a fraud

I read that book about 6 or 7 years ago but I don't remember it well enough to explain it in any sort of depth
10-24-2008 , 06:49 AM
I really like this one. Here is Derren Brown affecting an entire shopping mall

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOEKdaXIEHc

A lot of the other ones are really good too, but I like seeing it on a mass scale like this.
10-24-2008 , 07:46 AM
DG - i gave up on that paper when the guy seemed to be arguing that obama's use of phrases such as 'because' and 'that is why' were evidence that obama was a magician. He's a krank.
10-24-2008 , 07:51 AM
You think Derren Brown is a magician?

In other news gold has fallen below $700 ounce for a new 13 month low.

Pretty crazy graphic. Not sure exactly what it means, but I'm starting to think that the middle class really ought to be paying more taxes, not less.
10-24-2008 , 11:45 AM
lynch bobman

How can I afford to pay more taxes when I have all this outrageous credit card debt!

Interesting graph though.
10-24-2008 , 12:02 PM
Considering that the total US debt obligation (including medicare and social security) is over $500,000 / household, something needs to happen.

The way the US has been run for the past (however long) approaches criminal negligence.
10-24-2008 , 01:07 PM
Why did you put yourself in a position to have massive credit card debt?

I have no sympathy for those people (well, with a few exceptions).
10-24-2008 , 01:08 PM
Also, I knew WN was just speaking for most people in this country, in case someone thinks I misinterpreted his poast.
10-24-2008 , 01:08 PM
Also, my credit score is 786. I had no idea it was that high. It was 650 when I bought the house 2 1/2 years ago.

EDIT: Whoops, for a second there I thought this was the Community (i.e. antidan blog) thread.

grunching, but someone posted a link on my facebook of a howard stern clip from earlier this month where they interview clueless obama supporters which i thought was quite amusing:

This means you can buy an even BIGGER house now, right?

I'm already concidering buying lots. It'll probably go up due to the holliday seasons for almost all cultures being around the corner.

I may be abnormal because I have never actually had any debt. Unless it's required (like a car to get to a job etc) I'm pretty oldschool "save before buying". Actually I didn't even own a credit card untill like a year ago but Germany is a little different culturaly when it comes to CCs. Most restaurants don't accept them for example, stuff is mostly payed in cash (or via direct bank transfer).

Without my wife's salary, no.

I'm not really a house guy anyway. I'm terrible at fixing things, hate yard work etc. etc.

This whole credit crisis makes this skit even better.

I think it was originally aired 2-3 years ago.
