Indeed I was forced out of commentary into an argument, that much is true.

The questions they ask may be philosophical but their methodology answering them surely is not.
This seems rather overgeneralized. As to philosophical methodology, I think it would be difficult to read Aquinas' Summa Theologica and say that he wasn't attempting to be intellectually/philosophically honest. In the present day, Alvin Plantinga and Keith Yandell also do excellent philosophical work in the field of philosophy of religion imo.

Amplify,

What are your favorite Buddhism related books? Specifically books that aren't related to Zen Buddhism that you might recommend?

sure you can; why would one need to believe in a religion to wonder about the meaning of life, ethics, or philosophy?

So it seems like you disagree with how religions try to answer the philosophical questions they address--thereby, in effect, agreeing that discussion of religions is discussion of philosophy.

I always find it interesting why christians changed so much of the Jewish religion. Like the Sabbath -- i believe christians agree that the Sabbath is Saturday, yet they invented the lords day on Sunday to differentiate from the Jews. Or how Jesus' last supper was a passover seder, but Christians do not celebrate passover
That is interesting stuff. I believe it may be because the christian mythology is not fundamentally jewish, but was grafted on to jewish tradition. Of course, the jews have changed some things as well. You don't see any animal sacrifices for example.

Because that's pretty much the definition of religion?

I think my comments have been roundly mischaracterised.

I presumed this was a public forum. With a thread for the free exchange of views.

You absolutely don't need to believe in religion to ponder these things. Religion is still pertinent to the discussion.

Its like saying "why does string theory need to be dragged into a discussion on cosmology?" Even if you don't think string theory is correct, its still relevant to the discussion.

But Jesus was a Jew who followed these laws - for the most part.

Absolutely. But you made like 10 posts that none of us even understood and that seemed like their sole purpose

If the foundational premise is 'revealed truth' - the methodology that follows is rather inconsequential in philosophical terms, surely.

Mets,

How observant of a Jew are you?

You're posting on the internet on a Saturday which I'm pretty sure is a no-no. Pork? What else is there?

The way I look at it is philosophy is the field of trying to answer the unanswerable questions. Sometimes its not even answering them, but reducing them or even just understanding the questions.

Organized religions is one of the many ways me have tried to come to terms with these unanswerable questions.

You can go buy food from a supermarket (organized religion) so you can not starve. Its is perfectly valid to grown food in your backyard, though.

I clearly underestimated how oblique the cultural references were.

You could just stop talking about all this and actually join the discussion. This will be my last attempt to ask you to participate.

And btw-- there is a huge Jewish community in Buenos Aires. One sees people wearing yamakas all the time here. There was a Jewish center that was bombed by some suspected Iranian terrorists back I think in the late 90's. So the Argentines as a result love the Jews I think. One of the streets here is named after Rabin even. And there is a memorial at the Jewish center that was bombed that is supposed to be nice.

I have exchanged a view.

Amplify posited the question "what is self?"

I answered it is - Being in time.
That which poses the question what is self, is self.

Meh, i have a reply for how this and the last analogy doesnt really work but im too lazy to think of a way to word it. something about the religion part of the philosophies of religions being unnecessary.

I commented - that Dustin view.

That his metaphysics allowing him to believe in the supernatural - leads necessarily to an overly subjectivity world view that I do not share.
