Re: POG Philosophy and Religion thread

i am by no means saying all atheists are bad people. def not.

i guess my point is

if you truly believe in a god who will punish you for bad things you do, then you wont do truly bad things. so if you do, you don't believe

am i wrong?

Re: POG Philosophy and Religion thread

Are you saying the only reason you don't do bad things is that you know you will be punished if you do?

Thats the inherent hypocricy of religion in a nutshell in my eyes. Furthermore if you ONLY stop from doing bad things because of a threat of eternal punishment, are you really being good, or only being scared.

i get that too master.

i think a major purpose of religion is to stop people from doing bad things, and that ends up being good even if they stop for the wrong reasons

so lets go this way

define conscience

Haven't you just answered your own question? Atheists just don't have that one, they have the others

Thing is nothing in the various religious text is some god-given revelation you can't work out by reason. Most humans feel instinctively that killing is wrong.

there are other reasons, but like i said im not sure how to define them

like i asked, define conscience.

i mean if everyone had a perfect conscience we wouldn't need laws or jails or anything

so fear of punishment has to always be part of the equation

is it actually instinctive? I hope it is, but i dont know

if so, and with laws not allowing it as well, it still happens an awful lot

and define instinctive?

Re: POG Philosophy and Religion thread

But it happens from people both religious and irreligious. Just for example, heavily christian USA and muslim Turkey has a way higher murder rate than atheist Sweden; and the punishments in USA and Turkey are much more severe. I'm not saying that its due to being more religious a country, but since you are softly implying atheists have lesser morals, please show work.

no in most of my experience, it seems that atheists often have higher morals in general

but i think it's impossible to be a theist and committ a truly heinous crime
