if you are telling a true story, what is the incentive to make the story convincing?

The reason that I first said true was the random detail that I've underlined. Like it just unnecessarily complicates the story - if it were a lie, this is sort of elaborate.

What do you guys think?
I was wondering about this too. It was at night and there's no way he could've known whether it was a he or she anyway, but the story singals poor driving skills on part of the cop so it might've been a logical deduction he made after the incidence. Anyway, I'm gonna have to go with...

IT IS TRUE

How do you know it was a SHE if he or she wasn't close enough to get your plates?

I already answered three questions.
the story is actually true! Willing to answer any more questions if you guys are interested.

I knew it was a female because it was clear as she was driving towards us and I ended up meeting her weeks later under similar circumstances

New story then:

I once saved someone's life.

I was visiting a friend in Bruxelles, Belgium. We decided that we wanted to do some kayakking in the southern part of Belgium, so we took the train down. Of course, we had gotten up way too late and the train that we catched arrived after the kayakking place had already closed. However, we were determined and really wanted to kayak, so we went to the place and could see that there was still someone inside, so we knocked until he came out to greet us. He said that the place was closed, but after pleading for some time he finally allowed us to kayak on our own (normally you go out in groups with one or more "instructors") if we agreed to sign a waiver that the kayak place wouldn't be responsible if anything happened to us. We insta-signed and proceeded to get our kayak on.

It had a bunch of steep'ish waterfalls and we capsized at every single one of them. At the last one of them, we capsized yet again. Only this time, the stream/current was too strong and it trapped us at the mouth of the waterfall. I was under water for what felt like an eternity, but it was probably only 10 seconds. I finally get my head above water and proceed to spend 5 minutes on getting to the shore only 5 meters away from me. However, I look back, and my friend is still trapped and bopping up and down and he hasn't moved an inch. I am lucky to find some sort of rope-like thing at a wooden shed within eyesight and I tie it around a tree to keep me from not getting pulled in by the current. I then retrieve a paddle and I slowly move closer to my friend and am finally able to get a hold of him with the paddle and rescue him.

To this day he and I are both convinced that he wouldn't have survived if I hadn't rescued him.

Pretty sure that's a too-long-to-be-a-lie-therefore-it-is-a-LIE type story.

The stretch was longer, but we decided to call it quits after that. Our clothes were drenched and dirty, so we took most of that off and carried it to the next "stop". And the rest of our paddles and the kayak had gone downstream, so we had to retrieve that later down the stretch and pull it to shore and inform the guy where we'd left it.

Describe this rope-like thing in more detail and how it was used to save your friend.

if there was enough water to get your head underwater and enough current to make progression difficult you should have ended way downstream, which does not appear at all in your story

one does not simply retrieve paddles and kayak that went downstream in a lot of current for more than 5 minutes

I don't know, it was thin and had a light brown color.

I tied it around the tree - made a knot on the tree, pulled it tight, and then went out into the water with it wrapped around my hand a couple of times. So I held onto that with the one hand and then grabbed onto him with the paddle in my other hand.

I'll treat this as the third question.

I don't actually know how streams work, but what I know is that at the mouth of the waterfall me and my friend were being pulled further towards the mouth of the waterfall, but the rest of our stuff were flowing downstream (meaning away from the waterfall) where they either washed ashore or hit some rocks I believe - we found them again, at least.

Umm, yeah I don't now about this (probably ~10 meter long) rope-like thing that apparently was good enough to tie around a tree and your waist, yet is not an actual rope. But you happen to find one of those rope-like-yet-not-a-rope things at the wooden shed that happens to be conveniently located next to the disaster.

Plus the paddle seems to have had no problem swimming against the current that took you 5 minutes to beat.

Plus I feel like the story lacks the emotion I'd expect considering a friend of you nearly lost his life. I sense no panic, no urgency, just a pretty emotionless story. I'd expect a lot of thoughts rush through your head.

So I'll stick to LIES AND DAMN LIES.

I'll still answer LIE!

everytime i rented a kayak i was given a lifejacket even in totally safe rivers, kayak guy would not let you go on an actually dangerous river without lifejackets.

getting your head above water is not a problem with a lifejacket

I mean, they obviously weren't LARGE and TALL waterfalls - I just said steep'ish :P
