I've put together 20 intros to various songs. Your task is to name the artist/group as well as the name of the song, for as many of these as possible.

Get one right, score one point. Get both right, earn a bonus point for three total. Also, if you are the only contestant to score the full three points on one song, you'll earn two more bonus points.

Here are the music files:

Answers by PM.

Format:

1. Artist-Title
2. Artist-Title
etc.

Rules for research (copied from one of Soah's games): You may not do any research at all to find band names. You must decide what band you are guessing before doing any research on the song title which might also lead you to the band name. If you recognize what the song is but do not know its name, you are allowed to look it up as long as you know enough information about the song that you can get right in one try, and you would be able to provide other people instructions which would enable them to find the name in one try.

Examples of things that are ok:

a) You know which track number the song is on the CD, and you know which CD it is on or you only own one of their CDs. You may look up the title.
b) You know the lyrics to the song. You may google them.
c) You have this song in your youtube favorites, and there are no other songs from that band in your favorites. You may look it up.

Examples of things that are not ok:

a) You know what band it is, and you own some of their CDs, and if you start looking through the track listings you might be able to figure out what song it is.
b) Your friend knows the answer and will help you if you ask him.
c) You think maybe you'll come across the song by listening to an internet radio station.

Do not post anything which might improve someone's score.

I'll reveal in a week. If there's interest, I may make this into a series. I actually have one more theme idea, so there will definitely be one more. But if there's interest, I'll come up with one more.

More on the theme:

As DrOldSchool said, one hard part of making a quiz like this is choosing the songs. I've come up with a method that is pure Genius.

iTunes Genius Mix, that is. For those who don't know, the latest version of iTunes has a feature called iTunes Genius Mix. It will analyze your collection and come up with 12 mixes in which the songs generally meet a theme. In this case, the songs chosen were all in the "classic rock" genre.

I came up with this idea as I was bored and listening to an iTunes Genius Mix. I was trying to see if I could identify the song before the singing started. Then I thought, hey I can make a POG game out of this.

All the artists were chosen by iTunes Genius Mix. Sometimes, it picked a song that I couldn't use for some reason (I don't have it in MP3 format, it starts with singing, etc.). In that case, I chose another song by the same artist. There are no repeat artists. If iTunes chose an artist already in the quiz, I went to the next song.

Last time, the winner had 64 out of 90. I think this one is easier (and shorter). Winner should in the 40s or 50s (out of 60).

Question via PM, "Are any of these songs covers?"

AFAIK, only one song is a cover. Others may be covers, but I'm pretty sure that, with the exception of the one cover that I know of, all these songs are the most famous versions of the song.

There is also one live song, but I don't think that should change anyone's answer.

Last quiz, I introduced the concept that became known as the "pity point." The gist is that if your answer demonstrates that you know the song, you may get partial credit. (you can never get the full 3 points on such an answer). My decision may or may not be capricious and arbitrary.

Awesome!

I have 14 right off the top and 3 more that I am sure I know.

I actually have a chance in this one

Awesome!

Got 18 in the first few notes... but 2 are giving me problems. Probably need them to beat cards, TL, Nich, etc.

18 is amazing. I'm not entering for obvious reasons. But when I was coming up with the song list, I was playing along. I wound up getting 15 totally right. 2 with artist only, and 1 with title only. But classic rock is completely in my wheelhouse. I already know the theme of my next quiz, and I doubt I'd get even half correct on the next one.

Nich doesn't enter these. TL wasn't here when the last few were ran. And cards didn't enter mine, though I do believe he's entered before.

iirc, cards doesn't usually enter the music clip contests, although he dominates the lyric contests. legend I think is the expert at this format

I got 17 straight away. I don't recognize the other 3 although I have a pretty good idea of the band for one of them.

For those considering not entering because "old" people have a better shot at winning, keep in mind that the next one in this series will be much newer songs. Pretty much all from this decade.
