Welcome to the game thread of the third Magic: the Gathering Mishmash!

The game thread is posted early, to allow players plenty of time to read the rules.
Even if you are extremely lazy, make sure you read at least post #2.

The signup thread is HERE.

  • All spells are cast during the day. This includes spells that gain you night actions.
  • Instant and Sorcery spells are played by posting the card image in the thread and declare all variables, like e.g. targets
  • Sorcery spells may be played in a Main Phase only
  • Instant-Arcane spells (‘Arcanes’) are played by PM to the mod. No need to PM us the image of the spell, just the name will do. Posting Arcanes in the thread is potentially MODKILLABLE
  • TAP () abilities are played publicly in the thread. All other abilities go secretly by PM
  • Nobody may cast spells or use abilities the last 15 minutes of the day
  • Nobody may cast spells or use abilities during the Attack Phase
  • All players have an optional night action, starting Night 1: to request a specific color of mana. If you do, you receive that color mana that night. If you do not, you receive a random color AND a colorless mana.
  • Do not discuss art/flavor of cards that are not public
  • PM the mod when in doubt

I have played a Magic: the Gathering Mishmash before! What mechanics have changed?
Very few! You will need to know what Lycanthropy is. For the rest, you should be fine.

  • General ww rules can be found HERE. Obligatory stuff for newbie players and short term memory veterans.
  • Day will be from 08:00-21:00 EST. Main Phases will be at 10:30 EST and 17:30 EST
  • The format Bold Red is used for game actions. If you use this format, make sure it cannot be mistaken for a game action. The format Bold is restricted and should only be used for voting or you will confuse Fennecfox.
  • Do not quote from role PMs or other game PMs. Do not discuss artwork or flavor of cards that are not public.
  • Werewolf is a participation game. If you do not submit night actions or do not post sufficiently, you risk being subbed, modkilled or worse, without previous warning.
  • Do not discuss or request subs/modkills in the thread. If you have a problem with the participation of anyone, ship a PM to Richard Garfield.
  • There are no claiming restrictions, except for artwork/flavor of hidden cards (spells/roles).
  • Team NAs like the werewolf team NK can be watched/tracked, but not RB-ed or moved to another target

This game will probably feature a high killing rate. Rules and other things to consider:
  • Killing a player causes that player to lose one life. Typically, players will only have one life and leave the game, but some players with multiple lives will survive one (or more) kill(s).
  • If a spell or ability has been played that will kill you, you must stop posting IMMEDIATELY and not wait until the mod officially pronounces you dead
  • If you start posting, verify that you are still alive. An “Am I still alive”-post is fine.
  • In this game one deadpost is allowed. Do not disappoint us with the content, please.
  • There are no reanimation effects in the game. If you die, you may safely enter DVC
  • A lynched player loses all his/her lives.

All players in this game are Magic: the Gathering creatures. Here is an example:

Most is self-explanatory, a few observations:
  • Power/Toughness (or Power/Health). Power is the amount of damage you deal in combat (ITAs) to your opponent. Toughness/Health is the amount of damage required to kill you. Gabethebabe deals 1 damage in combat and requires 10 damage to be killed.
  • Abilities. Your abilities will be written in the main text box. These will be a mix of ww-abilities and MtG abilities. MtG abilities are always written as a cost, followed by a colon :, followed by an effect. If the cost of the ability includes the tap symbol (), then the ability will be played in public (tapping is a public effect). More on tapping later. Abilities that do not include the tap symbol, are submitted by PM. For example, Gabethebabe can draw 37 cards by paying {U} and when he wants to do that, he ships a PM to Richard Garfield.

WIN CONDITION
This is not written on your card. The win condition of the Villagers is to eliminate all non-villagers. The win condition of the Werewolves is to achieve parity with the village.

Mana is the resource required to pay for spells. There are 6 types of mana:
  • {W}=White mana
  • {U} = Blue mana
  • {B} = Black mana
  • {R} = Red mana
  • {G} = Green mana
  • {0}, {1}, {2}, etc. = Colorless mana
Note about colorless mana: if you have to pay {1}, you may pay it with colorless mana or with mana of any color.

Mana Pool.
Every player has his own Mana Pool - the mana that you have collected during the game.
  • Players can not share/exchange mana.
  • Mana in your mana pool is stationary. You will keep it until you use (some of) it to pay for a spell or ability.
  • There will be effects in the game that can add or drain mana from your pool.

Earning Mana
  • Every night, starting night 0, every player will receive one colorless mana and one mana of a random color.
  • Every night, starting night 1, every player is able to override this effect and choose to receive a specific color of mana. If you do this, you will NOT receive the colorless mana. This is an optional night action.
  • There will be plenty of EVENTS during the day that can gain you mana (or death)

Players will be able to draw cards. An example:

Spells/cards have:
  • Name. This spell is "Life Burst".
  • Casting cost. The amount of mana required to play the spell. Life Burst’s mana cost is {W}{U}{G}{1} which is one white mana, one blue mana, one green mana and one mana of any color.
  • Type. There are three types:
    1. Sorcery. These can be cast in the thread only during a Main Phase (See game phases)
    2. Instant. These can be cast in the thread at any moment of the day, until 15 minutes before EOD, but not during an Attack Phase.
    3. Instant - Arcane. These can be cast at any moment of the day by PM-ing Richard Garfield, until 15 minutes before EOD, but not during an Attack Phase.
WATCH OUT: posting an Instant-Arcane in the thread can get you modkilled!
  • Effect. Spells have some beneficial effect (or detrimental to whoever you target).
  • Extra Cost Effect. Life Burst has a Kicker cost. If you pay the cost of the spell plus the kicker for a total of {W}{W}{U}{G}{2}, the spell will be more powerful. Besides Kicker there is also Buyback, which is a special kind of kicker. Pay the casting cost + Buyback Cost of a spell and you keep the card in your hand, so you can play it again later.
  • Rarity. All spells have a rarity reflected by the color of the expansion symbol (middle right). Black is for Common cards, silver for Uncommon cards, gold for Rare cards and red for Mythic Rare cards. Rarer cards will usually be more powerful and have more demanding casting costs. If you draw a random card you will draw a common 70% of the time, an uncommon 22% of the time and a rare 8% of the time. Mythic Rares are special cards that can not be drawn in a normal way.

To play a spell do the following:
  • Make sure you still have the spell in your hand and you have not been targeted with some discard effect (check your PMs for this)
  • Make sure you have the mana in your mana pool to pay for the spell
  • Make sure you are not casting a Sorcery outside a Main Phase and are not casting Instant-Arcanes publicly in the thread
  • For Sorceries and Instants, post the image of the card in the thread and, if the spell so requires, name the target(s).
  • For Arcane spells, just PM the name of the card and target to Richard Garfield.
  • If the spell requires mana of any color, we will automatically deduct colorless mana from your mana pool. However, if you do not have enough colorless mana in your mana pool to satisfy the {X} of a spell, you will have to indicate which color you want to use.

Examples:
  • If you have {W}{W}{U}{B}{G} in your mana pool and you play Life Burst, you will have to indicate unambiguously whether the fourth mana will be white or black.
  • If you have {W}{U}{U}{G}{2} in your mana pool, automatically {W}{U}{G}{1} will be withdrawn from your pool.
  • If you have {U}{R}{G}{B}{2} in your mana pool, you are casting this spell illegally.

Day phase
During the day players may play spells and abilities until 15 minutes before EOD, but not during an Attack Phase. Remember that Sorceries can only be played during a Main Phase.

Main Phase
The Main Phase is the only phase during which Sorceries can be cast. Other spells and abilities can also be played during the Main Phase. There will be two Main Phases per day (at 10:30 EST and 17:30 EST), immediately followed by an Attack Phase.

Attack Phase
During the Attack Phase no spells or abilities may be played.
During the Attack Phase no spells or abilities may be played.
During the Attack Phase no spells or abilities may be played.
Players are allowed to attack another player by posting in Bold Red: Attack [playername]
  • You may only attack if you are untapped.
  • You may only attack once per day.
  • If you attack a player that just died (honest cross posting), you will get your attack back

An attack will have the following result:
  • The attacking player becomes tapped, unless (s)he has Vigilance.
  • Simultaneously, the attacking player deals damage equal to his power to the defending player and the defending player deals damage equal to his power to the attacking player.
  • After the attack, mods will inform if somebody died of lethal damage. If nobody died, damage dealt during the attack will stick on the player until EOD.
  • Nobody will be informed of the amount of damage that is dealt in combat. Attacks without casualties will always return Processed

Night phase (in this order)
  1. All players untap and have damage reduced to 0
  2. Night actions. If you gained a night action with an Arcane spell, you choose your target during the night
  3. All players draw a card and add mana to their pool. One mana of the color of your choice, if you submitted the night action. Otherwise one colorless mana and one mana of a random color.
During the night players can not spend mana / play spells, unless a spell describes otherwise.

Players can be tapped or untapped. Being tapped is usually a sign of having executed an action, like using an ability or attacking another player. Tapping is a cost to pay for some effect, just like spending mana.

In MtG tapping a card is usually represented by turning the card 90º sideways.

Gabethebabe is untapped:

Gabethebabe is tapped:

The mods will provide status reports about the tapped/untapped state of the players at regular intervals or whenever a hidden effect has changed the state of one or more players.

"TAP" ABILITIES
Most players will have a tap ability among their abilities, indicated with the tap symbol (). Some players will also have a mana cost included in their tap-ability. For example, to modkill a player, Gabethebabe needs to tap AND pay 2 mana of any color.

Tap abilities can be played at any moment in the day, but not during an Attack Phase and until 15 minutes before EOD, by posting in red bold:

TAP, {MANA COST}: [insert ability text here]

You will need to name targets etc as well when doing this, if the ability so requires. The format for this is not fixed, just make sure it is unambiguous.

For example, Gabethebabe could post this:
Quote:

  • To attack a player, you need to be untapped.
  • To use your tap ability, you need to be untapped.
  • Using your tap ability causes you to become tapped.
  • Attacking causes the attacker to become tapped (unless the player has Vigilance).
  • Tapped players still deal damage, when attacked.
  • All players untap during the night, unless some effect prohibits this

Besides tap abilities and the usual ww-abilities, there are also static MtG abilities in the game. They are the following:

Vigilance
If a player has vigilance, attacking does not cause the player to tap. This is a useful ability, because you can attack and use any tap ability you have later in the day.
RULES NOTE: Even if you have Vigilance, if you are tapped, you can not attack.

Flanking
If a player with flanking is being dealt combat damage (as defender or as attacker) and that combat damage is greater than 1, the damage is reduced to 1 instead. Flanking only reduces combat damage, not any other kind of damage (e.g. damage caused by spells or abilities).

Spectrum
A player with Spectrum may spend mana as though it were from any color. You only have to match the correct quantity of mana to play a spell or ability. Players with Spectrum can not control the color(s) of mana they spend - mana color(s)/colorless will be picked randomly.

Protection
A player with e.g. Protection from Purple (not an MtG color) has the following benefits:
  • All damage from Purple sources is prevented
  • Purple spells targeting you will fail
  • Tap abilities from Purple players targeting you will fail
  • Note that a purple player can still hurt you with spells, as long as these are not purple
Protection does nothing vs normal ww abilities, like for example a day vig or a night roleblock. It only provides protection vs MtG effects during the day. You can have protection from multiple colors.

Some players have Protection from Time Bombs (previously known as Booby Traps). You will soon learn what Time Bombs are and if you have this protection, an exploding Time Bomb will not harm you.

Being bitten by a werewolf is about the worst thing that can happen to you. There are ways to protect yourself against it, but when bitten, you will be infected with Lycanthropy, against which there is no cure. The disease progresses as follows:
  • Night 0, the night of the bite. The player is roleblocked.
  • Day 1, the day after. The Lycanthropy infection will be made public. The player can not vote and does not count for parity. At EOD, if still alive, the player leaves the game. The character remains alive.
  • Night 1. The character counts as a werewolf and executes a minor night action for the wolfteam (roleblock, track or watch)
  • Night 2. The character executes a major night action for the wolfteam (peek, angel or day angel)
  • Night 3+. The character will kill a player every night from now on

The Boobytraps from MtG II have returned, only I renamed them Time Bombs, because it seems a better description of what they do. Here is an example:

This is very innocent Time Bomb, as all that can happen is that you lose your cards. Almost a freeroll if you are loaded with crap commons. Expect not all Time Bombs to be innocent and expect that we will throw enough of them into the game to get some suckers killed. Don't want to die? Abstain from cutting any wires, it is that easy.

General rulings concerning Time Bombs:
  • To attempt to cut a wire, post in red bold: Cut [color] wire
  • You may attempt to cut multiple wires, but only one per post
  • A wire is cut by whoever cuts it first
  • When you have cut a wire successfully, all other cut attempts from you are invalidated
  • The event ends in 5 minutes

This is a Public Time Bomb. There will also be Silent Time Bombs, where players may submit a single cutting post by PM.

Legend tells of arrows strong
with feathers bright and shafts so long
Even the mightiest of Evil will shiver
When a mage equips this mighty quiver

This artifact one must wield alone
That mage however, is still unknown
For those of you that have a hide
Be known it is not on your side

One thing however is quite sure
The carrier's image must be pure
Show your pride, for all to see
You deeply love your MTG

Do not spam and do not slack
And launch no personal attack
Even if you face the greatest fool
It is no reason to lose your cool

If at end of day you have complied
Mods invoke rand.org and let it ride
If you are the one that has the luck
Everybody will be your sitting duck

Deadly spells is what you will cast
Those you dislike will die real fast
Show no mercy, rape and pillage
And be the hero of the village

It has not been formally announced yet, but the mod team of UncleDynamite and Gabethebabe has been competed with the addition of ihcjay. AWESOME!

MODDING
Please make it easy for us to mod this game:
  • Keep track of your own cards and mana. We (should) know exactly what you have, but that is no reason for you to be lazy.
  • When submitting Day/Night Actions by PM, put your action in the title or first line of the PM, so we don't need to actually open the PM
  • Please submit night actions on time, the earlier the better.
  • Please do not PM us any questions during Main Phase / Attack Phase.

DAY 1 (ONLY!)
  • There will not be any Main Phase or Attack Phase
  • There are no restrictions to spellcasting or using of abilities
  • As an exception, Sorceries can be cast at any time

Afflicted Deserter was sitting nervously in his house. People in the villages were preparing for a great battle to fight. They were so brave and would die for the good cause. He was quite different. He was no hero. He valued his life over anything else. When faced with the choice, he would rather offer his services to Evil than die a heroic death.

Q: A spell with Cycling, when can I use that ability?
A: Any time. Just send us a PM. Not during an ITA phase though and not the last 15 minutes of the day.

It is currently night. But evil things are stirring, not far away from you.
