The Game:

You will be setting up an imaginary food festival which begins the evening before a four-day holiday weekend. Visitors will pay a single entry fee to get access to unlimited food and beverage for the entire weekend. Each country that you draft will receive a tent in the festival grounds. Several qualified native (and multilingual) cooks will prepare a variety of dishes that are commonly associated with their country. The menu will be large enough to include items from each major region of the country. It may include breakfast items, main courses, sides, desserts, cocktails, and anything else that you can think of. All native fruits and other ingredients will be available. Beer, wine, coffee, tea, etc may be imported as well if it's culturally significant -- though no premium brands of alcohol. Good mid-range brands, but nothing that would break the bank. The quality of the facilities will be adequate for all types of cooking, and the food will be similar to that of an above-average restaurant in the native country. Portions will be small so that visitors can sample as much as possible. As the event manager, you may discuss your ideas with the cooks, but ultimately they are free to make their own decisions about how to best represent their countries. Generic entertainment will be provided so that people stay throughout the duration of the festival.

The Judging:

Players and spectators will rank each participant's festival in terms of which ones they would most like to have in their hometown. More information about casting ballots will be provided when it's time to vote.

The Rules:
  • Research: Allowed and encouraged.
  • Trades: You are allowed to trade future picks as well as countries you've already drafted. It's allowable to end up with a different number of total picks as a result. You are allowed to discuss trades by private message or in the draft thread. It is assumed that all trades are being made in good faith. Voters may be unimpressed if two friends make a clearly lopsided deal.
  • Time limits: Eight hour clock, and each player can also set a fixed six hour sleep period where it pauses for them. If the clock runs out, you are skipped. You don't lose your pick, and you can make it as soon as you return, but in the meantime the players behind you will be taking their turns, and you might lose a country you intended to draft. To prevent this from happening, send your pick by private message to the person behind you so that they may post it for you if you know that you will not be around when it's likely to be your turn. You're expected to be ready when it is your turn as much as possible to keep the game moving along. If you have a partner, your team is expected to make a selection when either member comes online.
  • Voting: All players are required to submit a ballot. To avoid ethical dilemmas, players will omit themselves on their own ballot. Spectators may vote. It is not permissible for players to contact non-players to ask them to vote, or to try in any way to influence the voting by any means other than through posts in the draft thread. Votes from spectators will only be counted if they are from bona fide POG members, at the discretion of the game mod. To vote, rank each entry (except your own) from best to worst. Assuming 10 players, first place will receive 9 points and each subsequent place will receive one point fewer. Voting will be done by private message and ballots will remain private. Players are expected to vote in good faith rather than try to sabotage the strongest competitors.
  • Undrafted countries: Players and spectators may not mention any countries yet to be drafted. This includes conversations made by private message to discuss trades. Granted, we have a closed set of possible draft items, so this is less of a concern than in most draft games, but I think it's best to keep the rule in place anyway.
  • Spectators: Anyone is free to post in this thread. You may comment on the picks that have been made and make general observations. Please don't try to give suggestions or directly influence people's picks. Indirect influence is likely to occur and that's fine. Just be sensible about it.

Draft Order and sleep periods:

1. Bloobird 8 pm - 2 am
2. NotGonnaLie 4 am - 10 am
3. filthyvermin 9 am - 3 pm
4. kokiri
5. eyebooger 12 am - 6 am
6. iamnotawerewolf 12 am - 6 am
7. sugabat
8. (Mrs) well named 12 am - 6 am
9. soah 5 am - 11 am
10. Gadarene 12 am - 6 am

This is a snake draft. We'll go top to bottom in odd-numbered rounds and bottom to top in even-numbered rounds.

Note: If anyone else wants to join, you can have my spot as long as you post in the thread to request it before I've made my first pick.

Players may begin making picks when ready. The clock will begin ticking tomorrow at noon, so the earliest that anyone could possibly be skipped is tomorrow at 8 pm. No need to rush the first picks if you're not ready.

This draft rewards creativity so I don't think its so bad to be near the back half of the pick order.

Forgot to include this in the OP, but we'll be going with Wikipedia's list of sovereign states rather than UN member states as I said initially.

I'd take it. Will switch with you in rounds 1,2,4. So in rounds 2-5 you would pick four spots ahead of me.

9 hours from your post would be about 2 am Eastern, so I can put you down for 8 pm to 2 am like Bloo.

With the first pick of Round One, I take...

China

Spoiler:
Pretty hard to look past a country that has about ten different regional cuisines that are each individually more complex, varied and delicious than the cuisine of a lot of entire countries. I did consider [UNDRAFTED] pretty hard, and maybe it's the better value pick, but personal preferences have to feed into this somewhere, and god dammit I just love Chinese food so much. From spare ribs and crispy seaweed as a kid, to the 'roast pig roast pork' I ordered blindly in [UNDRAFTED] that opened my eyes to the incredible and highly unhealthy world of siu yuk, to the tiny Sichuan restaurant near my old office that I used to go to weekly to try something else new on the absurdly long menu, to the 'grease down to your elbows' trashy deliciousness of Xi'an pork roujiamo, I've loved almost everything I've eaten, and know that there's much, much more out there that I've never tried, or never even heard of. And I've not even been to China, which is a source of great regret (one day, but probably once the kids are somewhat older).

And the regional varieties make for a natural setup for the food tent - one table for each region. A Cantonese table focusing on a variety of dim sum and tea. A Sichuan table with a hotpot bubbling away for you to cook your own meats in the communal broth, and various other spicy and numbing dishes. A table just dedicated to Peking duck prepared the proper way, left to hang for several days, because oh **** yes. A Shandong table with plenty of seafood. A Huaiyang table with...ok you get the message, and I'm beginning to know less and less about these varieties without looking them up, but then that's half the fun surely? Go on a culinary tour of China, experience both the familiar and the totally alien, all of it delicious, and all within the one tent.

and for the philistines who didn't really want to come to a food festival but got dragged along by their other halves, friends, whatever, we've set up a small table in the corner with Tsingtao on draft and a ****load of salt and pepper chicken wings, spare ribs, spring rolls and other inauthentic but undeniably brilliant drunk food, knock yourselves the **** out

Chinese food is equally comfortable being refined or trashy. Light or heavy. Mild or 'oh ****, I think I might have obliterated my tastebuds'. Whatever you're looking for, you should be able to find it here.

god I want some ****ing chinese food now

Can't fault that pick. I'll try and get my pick worked out in the next couple of hours. Exceptional trade offers will be considered.

Yum! Dim Sum! I love Chu Sa Bao (pork buns). If you lined the equator with pork buns I would eat them.

Will trade my spots in every even round with you in exchange for a switch in round 1. Basically after round 1, you'd be picking 3 spots ahead of me every round thereafter.

Decided I couldn't pass up on this one. With the second pick, I select:

Spoiler:
Italy,

Quality ingredients, simply and lovingly prepared. Italian cuisine has spread around the world, but is too often a pale imitation of the true flavor of Italy. If you've never had the good fortune to be invited into a real Italian Kitchen, let our festival correct that - you'll always leave satisfied.

No great meal starts without a drink. Start yours with a negroni, prosecco, or any of the many fine wines Italy has to offer. After your appetite has been whet, enjoy some simple antipasti. Proscuitto, caprese salad, or bruschetta. You don't need pretentious preparation when you are working with ingredients as delicious as these.

But we're just getting started. In the first course enjoy some pasta bolognese, carbonara, gnocchi, or risotto all topped with Parmigiano-Reggiano. Not the towering plates you might be used to, but a rich pasta dish to get you started, leaving you still wanting more.

Steak Florentine, Ossobuco, Chicken Cacciatore, Lamb Shanks alla Romana. Accompanied by polenta or grilled vegetables. Italy may be best known for pizza and pasta, but delivers top quality cuisine across all the courses.

The 'Dolce' course is no exception. Tiramisu, cannoli, gelato, panna cotta. With a small espresso alongside to capoff your meal. Enjoy a cappucino the next morning to get things started all over again.

Wait I forgot something? Oh that's right. Pizza. We aren't talking about that cardboard delivery stuff, hand kneaded and thrown by authentic pizzaiolos, cooked in wood fired ovens. Made for one with simple ingredients, authentic Italian pizza has been reimagined a million times, but never matched. Lunch, dinner or late night snack pizza never disappoints and our festival will be the only one offering it in its perfected form.

Often imitated, never duplicated. Our Italian chefs want to invite you into their kitchens to share their cuisine. A welcoming food culture, that wants to make sure you eat to your heart's content.

Italy is good value in my book, but I had expected it to fall a few more spots.

I have a new Chinese roommate who likes to cook, so by voting time I might have an actual informed opinion about that pick.

Didn't think I could move back and still get it. Italy brings alot to the table (no pun intended). But definitely some great options left out there.
