Re: Master3004 10615 post Well!
Master,
The one thing me and my significant other disagree about is our child serving. As a Canadian, I see the insane amount of preferences than veterans get in the US. From being given 10 points extra on all gov't jobs over non veterans, to being give 30% off at restaurants, to so many freebees. Then you factor in free education for college / university.
And I don't that 18 year olds are ready to decide on their future yet, they aren't educated enough in the world to know what they really want, so I think serving 2-3 years gives them focus + free education that its ideal for your son to do in America.
She is a women and sees fear and death.
I'm not looking for a solution or compromise from you but how would you recommend we talk through the issue? My thinking is I'll just get my way but that's not really fair but that is how the men in my family operate, we always get what we want.
So, if you were on the opposite side of the arguement as me, how would you want me to work through the situation with you?

Re: Master3004 10615 post Well!
I actually AM on the opposite side of the argument as you
Luckily, this one is kind of easy, because even though you don't think 18 year olds are ready for their future, the country does, and so you wouldn't be able to sign them up for it anyway.
I think the best thing in this situation is to sit down as a family and really lay out the pros and the cons to your son or daughter, WITHOUT either of you pushing your agenda. Its the same way I would present religion to my son if he asked. Here is what a number of people think, this is the reason why, here is what i think and the reason why. I can answer any question for you from my side of things, and if you want answers from the other side, we can go together to somebody on that side and see what they have to say.
Take your child to a recruiter, take him or her to an anti-war protest. We sit on such a vast knowledge database with the internet now, that there is no reason that somebody should not be well informed on the how and why of anything they want to know.
Make sure that both you and your SO are educated on both sides of it as well. Show her how great things can be for your child when they don't have to pay back student loans after 10 years (or whatever it is) and look up statistics together on just what percentage of soldiers serve in combat and how many of them die.
Thats my best suggestion to you, be open minded and look at everything, and since the decision will ultimately be up to the child, don't muddy their brain with prejudices, let them really decide on their own what they think will be best after having all the information.

Re: Master3004 10615 post Well!
Midterm coming up counting for half my grade, and I'm pretty sure I'm not ready. On top of that I'm getting flack for not spending time with the family because Im studying to pass my midterm (Worth half my grade for this class) so that I can get a better ****ing job than the one I have now and get us the **** out of here. I understand that I haven't been spending the largest amount of time with everyone because of work/school, bu, I don't feel like Im ready, and I got a test worth 50 ****ing percent coming up, and if I have to study every waking moment until that point, that damn well better be good enough.

Get the **** out of where?
Better question, where would you like to be in 5 years time geographically, personally, emotionally, all that stuff?

your family needs to back the hell off imo.
no reason for you to be made to feel guilty for pursuing your education. if you can find a way to let that bounce off you, you'll feel better and be less stressed. so try. don't let it get to you.

Re: Master3004 10615 post Well!
On top of that, Im getting flak at work for having a ****ty month. Our "worth" is determined by surveys filled out by customers about how well we've done in customer support, only most times, most customers will fill out the survey based on what happened with their case regardless of the level of customer service they received. Oftentimes you'll get a terrible score with a message that says "This has nothing to do with the rep, your policy just sucks" etc. But that **** still counts against you.
As a poker players, its infuriating to have one bad month out of the last twelve and take flack for it. Theres this ****ing thing called variance, and nobody at my job seems to understand that it ****ing exists. If the interactions I have are randomly assigned, it figures to reason that every once in a while I'm going to get **** scores regardless of the job I do, and on occasion, those **** scores will come in bunches. If I do great the majority of the time, I shouldnt have somebody breathing down my neck for a bad month.

****ing Tennessee, I hate this place so much. I think its breaking my mind.
Geogrpahically, probably anywhere on the west coast. (Maybe not Oregon or Southern Cali) Personally I just want to be done with school and in a job where I am making enough that I am not living paycheck to paycheck. Emotionally, I just want to be happy. Having money stresses on top of raising kids and having personal issues with possible mental problems and rage issues is tyring, and I just want to be at a point where I am happy.
