It is based on a Dutch TV program of a couple of decades ago, the Knock Out Show. It started with 1000 participants and in about 9-10 rounds you are down to just a very few.

It did not make it to a second season IIRC

There's a quiz show in Korea called Golden Bell where they visit a high school or middle school each episode and have all the kids sit on the floor holding a slate. They ask questions, the kids write it on their slate and hold it up. If you get one wrong, you're eliminated. I forget how many you need to "win" and get to ring the golden bell.

It's very heartwarming because once you get to the last contestant, all the students are cheering her on to ring the golden bell, and she gets all emotional. And you know this is the only time in that homely girl's life when she'll get that much attention. And it's always a homely girl at the end.

When I was volunteering in Senegal there was a similar game we'd play in the village called One up, 20 Down, and we would ask about local wildlife and plants and the like. Players would be slowly eliminated. The prizes were various knick knacks from the US. We ran it a few times and had lots of fun, but eventually had to cancel it after a chieftan nearly declared war on a rival tribe over an orange frisbee with a picture of Cal Ripken Jr. on it.
