Surely it just means something than you perceive as a successful club track. There are no real charts to judge "hit" in this context. (And a zillion brands of club-nights.)
The category: is about as simple as it could possibly be. Any song (that came out in 2016, obviously) where the main vocalist is female qualifies. Rap/spoken word counts. Instrumentals, obviously, do not.
The judge: I primarily listen to various genres of rock - primarily classic/alt/hard/garage/prog, secondarily new wave, indie, and more melodic varieties of metal. Rap/hip-hop is hit or miss - the former is more likely to succeed than the latter, but both are risky. Electronic music is much riskier, but I DO really like electroswing. Funk/jazz/etc will do well as I enjoy songs with horns in them.
I tend to prefer higher-pitched vocals over lower-pitched ones, though there are definitely exceptions. I'm willing to overlook poor lyrics if the vocals are good, and I'm willing to overlook poor vocals if the instrumental is good - though given the category, I'd like for there to be at least SOME level of vocal quality. I like guitars, horns, more uptempo varieties of violin, interesting basslines, and interesting drum beats. Solos are a good thing. Technical complexity is a good thing. Energetic will probably do better than feelsy.
that's a good category. if you are interested you can have my spot as a judge. i have not thought of a category yet. if you don't want to judge i'll use that category

I appreciate that, but I was just throwing an idea out there. Feel free to take it if you'd like!
This is where we're at? Thinking I'll post the sign-up thread with categories on Friday.
Anyone willing to volunteer to recieve and distribute the entries to the judges when the deadline closes? I.e. someone not playinng the game. Shouldn't take more than a few minutes of copy/pasting.
List of categories:
1. UD - Non-English
2. Walrein - Female lead vocalist
3. Nick - Something noisy, distorted or loud
4. fnord - Funk (something that resembles something vaguely related to something inspired by funk is fine)
5. JMurder - Rap
6. iraisetoomuch - Dance/Club hits
7. Zaccino - Short song (=< 3min)
8. tchaz - popwilleatitself (something new out of something(s) else - see above spoiler)

10. soma - ?
11. jumpluff - ?
i take the "song on a debut album" category. since the main goal of the category is finding new artists you can also submit songs by artists who have not released their debut album yet. so singles and songs from eps are accepted as well

Sorry for the delay, some category overlap occurred to say the least with what I intended to run. Anyway I'm ready to go. If writeups are wanted like UD's lmk, I can put out something short
Nice picks guys! Should be fun putting together an entry (and slightly challenging. Some categories I'm quite deep in and some I have little in)
Going to run the following category: Intensity
Can be musical or lyrical or whatever, just send in the most spirited, passionate, or life-or-death serious thing you've got from 2016.

does "non-english" exclude instrumentals? like does it mean a song with lyrics in a different language, or in the more literal sense of just non english
I'll post the game thread tomorrow. If no one outside of the game wants to receive and distribute entries I'll drop out as player/judge and just do the modding.

I don't see any conflict of interest in a judge or player or both handing out the entries.
I'm a yuge Prince fan, and not a hator of either Bowie or Cohen, but ... c'mon .. rilly .. we're going to make everyone choose something from those records?
Look here's a really great category you'll all love:
