Spade Harry Potter 4 "The Battle Of Pogwarts" MishMash Game Thread

Welcome to the game thread of the Harry Potter 4 Mishmash - “The Battle of Pogwarts”!

This thread has been posted early, to allow everybody to check out the design prior to the game and read the rather tl;dr opening posts, multiple times. The signup thread is HERE. Click the link to sign up and ask any pre-game (rules) question you might have!

This game will start on February 6th, 2012.
Day will typically be from 08:00-21:00 EST.

RULES AND OBSERVATIONS
  • General ww-rules can be found HERE. Obligatory stuff for newbie players and short term memory veterans.
  • We will no longer use Bold Purple for game actions. It was too easily mistaken for Bold DarkOrchid, Bold Plum and whatnot. We now use Bold Red, which everybody should be able to produce, even on phones.
  • Do not use Bold Red for anything but game actions. Do not use Bold for anything but votes.
  • There are no posting limitations, but since this is a large mishmash, please reduce on the fluffing or risk being modsilenced for a certain period of time.
  • Many of you will be killed during broad daylight. Before posting, verify that you are still alive. Deadposting a final ty/gg/fu/gl is allowed, deadposting your peeks, reads or any other content will result in your team being punished.
  • Do not talk about role PMs or other game PMs.
  • Werewolf is a participation game. Players who do not post sufficiently or do not submit their night actions risk being subbed or modkilled with or without previous warning.
  • This is a LARGE mishmash. Please behave accordingly to not spoil the game experience of others - there will be nigh zero tolerance for trolling or flaming of fellow players.
  • More specific posts with information and rules will follow. I strongly suggest you read it all. Be unaware now ==> be sorry later.

CREDITS AND MODDING
  • This game has been designed by Gabethebabe.
  • This game will be modded by Evene, Noah and Gabethebabe.
  • The Mod account is JK Rowling. Click the link to sent us a PM.
  • Please do not send us fluff PMs.
  • Do not delete game PMs until after the game, for backup purposes.

Re: Harry Potter 4 "The Battle Of Pogwarts" MishMash Game Thread

EVENTS
  • In this game there will be multiple ****EVENTS****
  • Some of the events will be pre-announced. Most will not.
  • Some events will require a certain posting speed/agility. Phone posters can and will be at disadvantage. That is your problem. You are still required to Bold Red your spells.
  • Participating in ****EVENTS**** can lead to rewards, some small, some not so small
  • Participating in ****EVENTS**** can be quite dangerous at times and is completely at your own risk.
  • ALL PLAYERS may cast spells in ****EVENTS**** that require spellcasting. It doesn´t matter if you got randed wizard, squib, cat flee or ****ing planet. In ****EVENTS**** all players are equal and have 100% success probability for their spells, if correctly spelled in Bold Red
  • Please read the previous two rules again.

Re: Harry Potter 4 "The Battle Of Pogwarts" MishMash Game Thread

SPELLS
  • All spells are to be written in Bold Red, correctly spelled. Timing is often a factor and sloppy writing or abbreviations give unfair advantage (So, no AK).
  • All players may participate in In-Thread Attacks and cast spells. If you are not a wizard, your spells will simply always fail.
  • There will be **** Events **** during which casting of spells is required. Everybody may participate in those, also the non-wizards.
  • Spells cast during **** Events **** all have 100% probability of success, if posted in Bold Red and correctly spelled.
  • If you are handicapped (e.g. phone posting, crappy internet connection), participating in ****EVENTS**** might pose a risk, because in some cases a certain agility is required.
  • Do not use Bold Red for anything else but spells and other game actions.
  • You may cast multiple spells in a single post, as long as you adhere to maximum spell count requirements.
  • Spells can not backfire in this game. They either Hit or Miss

IN-THREAD ATTACKS
The bread and butter of this game. Some spells from previous games have been eliminated from the design, others have been added.
The spells and their effects are public knowledge, please meet them:

The Unforgivable Curses
Avada Kedavra, the Killing Curse.
  • To instantly kill a player. There is no defense against this spell, cross your fingers and hope it misses.
  • Every time you use this curse on a player, that player will permanently get +10% to any Unforgivable Curse against you.

Crucio, the Cruciatus Curse.
  • The first and second Crucio that hits will deprieve the victim of his night actions for one night. This does not affect Potion actions or unblockable actions.
  • The third Crucio that hits will kill the victim.
  • Every time you use this curse on a player, that player will permanently get +5% to any Unforgivable Curse against you.

Imperio, the Imperius Curse.
  • A successful Imperius Curse means you control the night action(s) of a player for two nights (you choose a victim and all that players night actions will target that victim).
  • This curse has a mental effect and only the caster will be informed if it hit (by mod PM).
  • This curse will always fail when cast against an unconscious player.
  • Every time you use this curse on a player, that player will permanently get +3% to any Unforgivable Curse against you.

Unforgivable Curses anger your victim and makes them more effective against you. These bonuses stack. If you are not a wizard, every Unforgivable Curse you cast will still anger your victim, even though your Curse will not have any effect. Don´t cast Unforgivable Curses without good reason!

The defensive spells
Protego, the Shield Charm
  • Quote any spell that is cast against you and reply with this spell to potentially protect you from its effect.
  • A randomly cast Protego does nothing. You MUST quote the spell you are defending against.
  • You have to cast the Shield Charm in the same time stamp (hh:mm) as the spell you are defending against or 1 minute later.
  • This spell does not protect against the Killing Curse.
  • If Protego is cast, the incoming spell will only hit if that spell has been successful and the casting of Protego has been unsuccessful (for the mathematicians: P(Spell)*(1-P(Protego)).

Expelliarmus, the disarm spell
  • To temporarily remove the wand from a player.
  • That player can no further participate in that ITA period

Stupefy, the stun spell
  • To temporarily knock a player unconscious.
  • That player can no further participate in that ITA period
  • That player´s Agility is 0 during the rest of the ITA period
  • All spells targeting that player have a +5% probability of success
  • The Legilimens and Imperio spell will always fail against an unconscious player

The information spell
Legilimens, the peek spell
  • This spell will provide you with full information of that player´s role
  • This is a very low probability spell (0-3 % for practically all players)
  • This spell will always fail when cast against an unconscious player
  • Since this is a mental spell, only the caster will be informed if it hit (by mod PM).

ITA Spell limit
  • You may cast two spells during an ITA period.
  • Avada Kedavra and Legilimens count for two spells. One of them and you´re done.
  • Crucio, Imperio, Stupefy, Expelliarmus count for one spell. Two of these, in any combination, is legal.
  • Protego counts for zero. You may always defend against a spell that comes in your direction.
Exceeding your spell limit in an ITA period will be punished.

Agility
  • The Killing Curse can not be blocked, but an agile player may dodge it
  • Every player will have a characteristic named Agility. Agility is expressed in % (e.g. 10%).
  • The probability that the Killing Curse hits is equal to the success rate of the caster minus the Agility of the victim.

Wands
  • All wizards start the game with a standard wand (Oak wood with Thestral hair), unless described otherwise in your role PM.
  • Wands can be sold/bought in Olivander´s Wand Shop. This is a day action.
  • A player carrying more than one wand may not participate in ITAs/duels.
  • If you are not a wizard, buying a wand will not help you.

Example
  • Player B has 40% probability of success of the Killing Curse
  • Player B carries a wand that gives +10% to casting of the Killing Curse
  • Player B has a 5% bonus on Unforgivable Curses against player A, because Player A has targeted Player B once with the Cruciatus Curse.
  • Player A has 20% Agility.
  • If Player B casts the Killing Curse targeting Player A, it will have 40+10+5-20=35% probability of success.

Player profile
Every wizard has a basic spellcasting profile consisting of:
  • Success probability of the Killing Curse
  • Success probability of the Cruciatus Curse
  • Success probability of the Imperius Curse
  • Success probability of the Disarm Spell
  • Success probability of the Stun Spell
  • Success probability of the Shield Charm
  • Success probability of the Legilimens Spell
  • Agility
This profile may be improved by temporary effects, Unforgivable Curses cast against you, the wand you carry, etc.
Non-wizards will only have an Agility.
Note that spells cannot backfire in this game.

At the start of the game, nobody will know their spellcasting profile. There will be multiple ways in the game to find them out, entering a duel is probably the most dangerous method!

Re: Harry Potter 4 "The Battle Of Pogwarts" MishMash Game Thread

WIZARD DUELS

Wizard duels have a single purpose: to kill the opponent. Two wizards entering a duel will proceed until one of them is dead.
  • Any wizard may challenge a specific player by posting Challenge [playername] in bold red.
  • Any wizard may create an open challenge by posting Challenge everybody in bold red.
  • Any challenged wizard may accept a challenge by posting Accept Challenge of [playername] in bold red.
  • Any wizard may cancel all his/hers open challenges by posting Cancel all Challenges in bold red.
  • The duel will be performed when both players and a moderator are available.
  • Non-wizards cannot participate in duels. Wizards may only participate in at most one duel per day.

The following spells are available in a duel:
  1. Avada Kedavra, ldo
  2. Crucio. The first hit will have no effect. The second hit will temporarily paralyze your opponent, giving you the opportunity to cast a free* Unforgivable Curse. The third hit will kill the opponent. Casting Crucio in a duel does not affect the night actions of the victim.
  3. Stupefy. If it hits, it will give you the opportunity to fire two free* Unforgivable Curses at your opponent
  4. Expelliarmus. In a duel it does the same as Stupefy
  5. Protego - the Shield Charm (does nothing vs the Killing Curse).
*Free Unforgivable Curse: your opponent may not cast the Shield Charm to defend against it, nor intervene with his own spells.

RULES NOTES:
  • Just before fighting the duel, both players will receive a PM disclosing their own magical skills/spellcasting profile.
  • You may only cast one spell per post. If you cast Protego, you still have to quote the offensive spell.
  • If there are two minutes without casting spells from either player, both will be modkilled.
  • If a player has multiple lives and is killed in a duel, he will lose one of his lives and the duel will end.
  • A day angel effect, if such effect exists in the game, does not prevent death in a duel.
  • In a duel you only need to cast the spell, you don´t need to write the name of the target
  • All spells are to be cast in bold red, correctly spelled (no abbreviations, e.g. AK)
  • Remember that any Unforgivable Curse you cast will increase the success probability of Unforgivable Curses cast against you
  • Cruciatus Curses that hit a player during ITA don´t count during a duel and vice versa.
(if someone was already hit once with the Cruciatus Curse during ITAs, in a duel you still need to hit him three times to kill him). A Cruciatus Curse in a duel does not take away night actions.
There will not be any wizard duels day 1.

Re: Harry Potter 4 "The Battle Of Pogwarts" MishMash Game Thread

ABOUT CLAIMING

Because all characters in this game are very well known, there are extremely strict rules regarding claims. READ THEM CAREFULLY. Please do not hurt your team by being unaware of them.
  • You may claim to be a wizard or not a wizard (non-wizard),
  • You may claim your abilities, unless you have claiming restrictions,
  • You may claim your role name (“Watcher”, “Roleblocker”, Seer”, etc), unless you have claiming restrictions,
THAT´S IT.

  • You are not allowed to claim your character name or provide letters of your character name or even confirm them,
  • You are not allowed to provide hints to your character name,
  • You are not allowed to reveal flavor text from your role,
  • You are not allowed to state that you are a family member of [known character name], a ghost, an animal or Animagus, a house elf, items you carry or have carried, a member of Dumbledore´s Army, a member of the Order of the Phoenix, a Death Eater, etc. All exceptions have been provided, there will be no more exceptions.

Various roles have an additional “Claim Note” regarding restrictions to claiming. This is done to prevent too many players being able to clear themselves with their role. If you have a claim note, typically you can only claim to be “Vanilla”. DO NOT STATE THAT YOU HAVE CLAIMING RESTRICTIONS. Please adhere to claiming restrictions and ask JK Rowling beforehand in case of doubt.

Illegal claims will be dealt with, in accordance with the size of the infraction. Night actions or voting power may be lost, underwear confiscated, unblockable peeks/kills rewarded to the opponents, etc.

Re: Harry Potter 4 "The Battle Of Pogwarts" MishMash Game Thread

Additional rules note on ITA spells

Players will not get back spells that were cast vs dead players.

Besides targeting dead players, there are various ways to cast spells that can never be effective, for example casting a spell vs a player with exemption in that ITA period, casting a mental spell vs a stunned player, casting Expelliarmus vs a player that is unconscious or has been disarmed already.

If spells cast vs dead players would be returned, the logical thing would be to give them all back and not make one exception only. These many scenarios would complicate ITA handling and open possibilities for angle-shooty plays. To avoid these problems, spells will not be returned and players will therefore have to be more careful casting them.

Re: Harry Potter 4 "The Battle Of Pogwarts" MishMash Game Thread

The days were getting colder and shorter. The streets, that normally were crowded with playing children, colourfully dressed wizards discussing todays´s news, Goblin merchants trying to make a Sickle and the usual seriously looking businesswizards, were now deserted. The people of the village were spending as few time as needed on the streets and those that ventured a trip, did so only because it could not be avoided, but never longer or further away from home than necessary, hiding their faces with cloaks from curious or unfriendly eyes.

It was the eve of the second wizard war. Whatever peace there was today, would be gone tomorrow. The ultimatum issued by He Who Shall Not Be Named elapsed this evening. There were few who thought that meeting the Dark Lord´s demands would be wisdom, there were even less that believed it would actually be done. Surely the Boy would not walk into the arms of his eternal enemy and embrace his own death, nor would Pogwarts ever consider to yield and allow He Who Shall Not Be Named to control the education of the young wizards and infest them with knowledge of Dark Magic. Nobody would expect or hope to see the opponents of the Dark Lord cast down their wands, end resistance and forever change their allegiance in exchange for His mercy.

Today was a silence before the Great Storm. Everybody was preparing for what would inevitably follow. Defensive charms were cast to protect homes and hiding places, as there was the Headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix, one of the few safe places that were left; not yet discovered by followers of the Dark Lord, nor compromised by treachery. There were a handful of people that dared to listen to the broadcasting of Potterwatch, the illegal radio station by and for those that continued to oppose He Who Shall Not Be Named, providing news that official media would fail to provide (mostly innocent people being killed or gone missing) and suggest countermeasures for the latest schemes invented by followers of the Dark Lord.

Terrible creatures that normally hid in dark places were creeping out, taking advantage of shrinking defensive lines and trying to prey on the weak and unaware - leaving unclear whether they were killing on His orders or just following their own evil instincts. The worst among them were undoubtedly the Dementors, spreading cold and unhappiness and leaving their victims in a state worse than death.

The future will also be influenced by powerful magical items, often of the dark kind, that are being carried by loyal, truthful wizards and which must remain out of the reach of evil minds that seek them and wish to use them to increase their own power. The carriers of these items will need determination and wisdom to face the peril that lies on their path, for their quest is full of risks.

The future is dark and uncertain. Whether there will be a moment that any side accepts defeat or claims victory is uncertain. Whether any specific person will leave the battle unscathed is uncertain. The only thing that is certain is that death is on its way and the few individuals that manage to survive will feel the suffering of losing loved ones in the battle that is about to begin.

IT IS DAY!
