I've started a timer until sirfelixcat declares how surprised he is that poker player don't play more 18xx and splotter games. i'm getting my first 18xx soon. quite excited for 1846 which i bought on his recommendation. also looking forward to great zimbabwe which should be coming soonish.

Tichu is a great game. Current top 3 probably: food chain magnate, steam, el grande

Is king of Tokyo any good? My main group of people play settlers, coup, sushi go and love letter - quick, reasonably easy games with some strategy but some luck. On more hardcore nights one night werewolf and resistance.

I'll piggyback on this and say I'm looking for a good Seattle based group

King of Tokyo might be good for your group.

Use MeetUp app to find gamers near you; they prolly get together at various restaurants on different nights of the week

It does surprise me, but we've been down that road

My Top 3
1- Through the Ages (new edition)
2- Age of Steam
3 Dominant Species

We play 3-4 nights a week and all day most Saturdays (some Sunday's too). Some weeks we don't play anything save for Saturdays, but that's fairly rare. It's the hobby that replaced playing poker online for me, so there's a hole to fill that it fills nicely. Which also explains why I play heavier, more meaty decision-based games, as it fills the hole that playing poker once did.

Any expert Terra Mystica players here? How do you analyse and improve on your past games, its usually not obvious what mistakes were made. Been playing seriously for a month online now 10/12 wins 145 avg - all against weak opposition. Have studied a lot of the opening stats/threads, but not learning enough from my own errors.

Also played Ricochet Robots recently - fast puzzle game, highly recommend it, especially to 2p2.

It sounds like you're doing pretty well. I'm far from an expert but I'm participating in the league, so I think it's good to play more competitive games. I think averaging 145 is really good but if you are only playing bad players then that doesn't mean too much. Just try to play better players, start games with a rating requirement etc. and then it should become easier to see where you're going wrong and what you struggle with when you play some players that know what you are trying to do and block you etc.

I'm around 1100 rating but not playing many non league games and rushing a bit when I do play them but I like the learn from doing approach.

I'm not sure I like playing games that seriously. At least not when playing with friends. I prefer mixing it up a bit well.

Terraforming Mars is a great game

And Uwe's new one A Feast for Odin is a nice game; looks more complicated than it is

Has anyone played Ticket to Ride (USA version) board game?

I played it for the first time a couple of weeks ago.

Was fun. Easy to learn and the game set was high quality..

Ticket to Ride USA is decent, but Ticket to Ride Europe is quite a bit better.

Airlines Europe (by the same designer) is even better than that.

I've played a ton of TTR and I think USA is better for heads up games. Europe's probably better multiway but still has its flaws, like just immediately trying to build the 8-length tunnel up top is close to a dominant strategy often.

For my money TTR is such a perfect gateway game. Anyone who hasn't played many newer boardgames can grasp the strategy immediately and is totally engaged the whole time. Also it has really nice bits and is a great tactile experience. Giving people cool stuff to play with always improves the experience. I think my favorite map is Switzerland for 2 and 3 player games.

For full disclosure, I've never actually played TTR (either version) 1v1.

Thanks for the replies on TTR. Going to get the game.
