On the other hand, cross-platform programming is something I've been meaning to get up to speed on... a cross-platform sheepulator might be a good little project to start with

I used C# for the sheepulator.

Microsoft has a bunch of new cross-platform stuff which is supposed to support iOS and Android (and presumably Linux as well) so I might be able to use C# for this as well.
