Too late for the 2nd level at this point, the unexpected would've been if you did the level 1 again

I'm listening to the next category now. Hoping to get a reveal off tonight, may or may not happen. I would liken this category to a Russian dashcam video in terms of how disastrous it is. I'm hoping some songs grow on me with repeated listens because at the moment there are about 4 of them that I enjoy at all.

These walruses always appear in cycles, and I'm good in the first one, as I just quickly skim through what new music I've been listening to lately, and submit ones that fit the categories. Then when there's a bunch in a row, I don't have enough of new songs, and am too lazy to put a lot of work into remembering what would work for what, and instead just throw together the first songs that somehow suit the categories.

I'm worried about my category five because while it's legit incredible idk if Chris will be able to get past just how lo-fi it is.

OK I have a pretty good handle on the ordering now. I'm going to embark on a lazy, sprawling reveal that will be conducted in the downtime of watching Arsenal v Liverpool.

Ee.. What game they are playing?

I thought this weekend is pretty much only national team games and some lower league stuff.

CATEGORY 5. A song that you can't help but sing along to.

Consider your report cards collectively marked "can do better". Probably the worst category so far, with I'd say a majority of songs that would cause me to hammer the Skip button if they came on on shuffle.

What would I have submitted?

Dude. Just about anything. Ask Wes or Dexy. I sing along to everything, often after having been asked several times politely to stop.

I'm gonna go with this:

Spoiler:
Barenaked Ladies - Life, In a Nutshell

Just because it has one of the GOAT opening lines of all times, to wit: "When she was three, her Barbies always did it on the first date".

No chance I'm not singing along to that and after that, no reason to stop singing ever presents itself.

In 11th place, scoring 1 point

Sigh.

Spoiler:
CrimsonFox with Bushfire by the B52s

I feel legit bad about giving a new player three last places, but the thing is that my ears wanted to seek the death penalty for this one. I had to plea bargain down to just a last place.

Loveshack is one of the more annoying floor-fillers for overweight middle-aged women and this song is like a worse clone of it. The worst thing is that the chorus keeps cropping up in my mind now. And no, that doesn't make it good.

Spoiler:
A new player not knowing what songs are unlikely to score well is one thing, but an established walrus player just lighting his entry on fire?

Spoiler:
Probably not a good sign if before a reveal you realise that you're worried that your entry is going to get rated badly.

Spoiler:
Bloobird with Cubs in Five by The Mountain Goats

It's not how lo-fi it is (although deliberately put-on lo-fi is annoying as ****), it's that it just isn't a good song. "Grating" is the word that leaps to mind. Bloo described this song to me in his submission thus:

Quote:
one of the all time GOAT choruses
I'll let the walrusing public decide whether it's him or me that are out of our ****ing minds, but clearly one of us is. It's a terrible chorus.

And thus it was that a song in a genre I specifically described as "no hoper" in the OP manages to claw its way to third to last.

SMUTTTT with Old Dan Tucker (live) by Bruce Springsteen

WesleyC with New Partner (live) by Bonnie "Prince" Billy

In our group of friends there's a particular genre of music known disparagingly as "Wes Music". It's directionless rootsy sort of stuff with a singer who either can't sing well or for some reason is declining to do so. Usually there are harmonicas or violins involved. This is a shining example right here.

I promise this reveal is going to get less snarky and negative soon. Just not right now.

In 7th place, scoring 5 points

From this person's submission:

Spoiler:
5) A song you can't help but sing along to.

In before indie with indistinct vocals. Oh well.

Spoiler:
Monkey Banana with Seventeen by Youth Lagoon

OH WELL indeed. In the OP I warned against vocals that are "disinterested in a particularly studied way, like it would be uncool to put any emotion into your singing". So if you suspected deliberately muffled vocals might not be an asset in a category all about singing along, then yes, you were correct.

I'm not sure I'd particularly like the song even recorded normally, but is there anyone here who thinks the way the vocals were recorded makes the track better? I don't get why artists do it. There's a place for distorted vocals but not in a genre like this.

Shrug. It's pop. Not offended by it. Wouldn't seek it out. Don't really feel strongly about it in any direction

tappokone with Mess Me Around by The Babies

As I said before, this sort of punk-rockish stuff isn't really my thing, but this is a pretty good track. Fun listen.

Willi with Pushing On by Oliver $ & Jimi Jules

The first track in the category that I can say without caveats that I enjoyed listening to. OK, it's stock standard house, but it has a pretty sweet vocal sample. Fun video clip as well.
