I, for one, am outraged that Chris is revealing OVER TWO HOURS LATE. Don't think we should stand for it.

CATEGORY 2: 2) A song that showcases my favourite instrument, the piano, at its best. (Ben Folds = 0).

This was generally a bit easier to rank, although it was a bit too stacked up top. There were 4 podium-worthy submissions and after several counts my pet walrus assures me that podiums only have three places.

What would I have submitted?

Spoiler:
Since I'm too lazy to think of something else, here's something I actually have submitted to a walrus:

Dream Theatre - Wait For Sleep

I generally hate Dream Theatre and this is the only song of theirs in my collection. It's a little overwrought and overproduced, but it captures the calming, slightly dream-like quality that I love about the piano.

Yeah, that has a few of you rethinking your submissions I bet :P

Crimson Fox with Cancer by Joe Jackson

Spoiler:

Ugh. I've never liked what I've heard of Joe Jackson. Find him generally dull and middle-of-the-roadish. This song also features a very irritating and repetitive vocal line, and that faux-jazz thing it has going on really rubs me up the wrong way as well. Couldn't find much to like about this I'm afraid.

ZOMG reveal.

I really wanted to go Shearwater here but figured it'd be cheating given how much Chris loved The World in 1984.

As with the previous round, that concludes the songs I actively disliked. I'm more "ehhhh" about the next few songs than I was on round 1 though.

In 10th place, scoring 2 points

Spoiler:
Willi with At The Ivy Gate by Brian Crain

You probably thought you were good to go after that little speech about dream-like tracks in the intro, but I'm not feelin' this.

Simple at heart and more "pretty" than actually having much emotional resonance. It was in Shrek apparently? Even though I don't think it was purpose-written for a score, it has that same sound. It would do a great job on a score but I'd never just sit and listen to this.

I've listened to some of their other stuff, haven't liked any of the rest close to as much. I will work through their albums at some point. I have so little time now, partly I wanted to run a walrus as a commitment to actually sit and listen to some new music.

Dexy with If you ever need a stranger (to sing at your wedding) by Jens Lekman

First of all, Jesus Christ, what is going on with the production on this? It sounds like the vocals were recorded on an iPhone in a bathroom. I don't usually notice such things but this really distracts.

I have some other issues with the song. I don't really like him as a singer, I feel like the song would be better sung an octave up, and the lyrics are... like, this is a line in the song: ""I would cut off my right arm to be someone's lover"". Cue eye roll. Pretty sure his right arm IS his lover.

The piano in this song is nice for sure, and I feel like there's a good song trying to get out. This is unfortunately a rare case of style overruling substance on a song. I find it hard to overlook the list of things that annoy me.

I dunno man. I haven't even listened to most of the rest of your submission yet but this might not be your walrus.

Spoiler:
Jabonator with Out of Sight, Out of Mind by The Reign of Kindo

As with your last submission, it's hard to point to anything concretely wrong with this. It feels a bit style over substance to me again - I don't find it engaging. I can imagine other people liking it a lot, I'm just not that guy.

Is Dexy an irl friend of yours or just a new Walruser? He's off to a pretty good start.

Edit: imo, not so much in Chris' opinion

SMUTTTT with Perpetuum Mobile - Penguin Cafe Orchestra

This is hard to judge after how overplayed that Avicii track has been. I didn't realise that was a total ripoff.

I do like it quite a bit but it sits at the bottom of the songs I enjoyed in part because I don't think it's a good category fit. To me the strings are very much the driving force of the piece.

No youtube for this so instead here is a picture of a sea otter:

Spotify link for album.

The first time it dawned on me there weren't going to be any vocals I was like "wtf is this, this is too minimalist to have no vocals". It definitely grew on me, it's a nice piece. I still feel like it underdelivers a hair and it's not mixing it with the top few songs because of that.

WesleyC with Carol of the Bells by George Winston

I find it mildly amusing that having listed classical as a dubious genre, people's reaction to this category was to deluge me in instrumentals (there's one more to come).

Nice piece. One of my favourite bits - and I know it's simple - was just that slightly menacing repeated 4-note riff that makes up the backbone of the song. I'd have preferred it if the song explored that menacing feel a bit more and maybe went a little more experimental. It stayed in fairly straightforward territory though. But yeah, I like it a lot and it falls just outside the elite top 4.
