This one unfortunately falls victim to a common problem for me in Walruses.

yeah, maybe if my Spanish extended further than ordering beer and asking where the library is, this might be ranking higher, but while the music is perfectly pleasant, it's not enough to carry the song on its own for me
This does not bode well for a couple of my future entries.

OK now I'm ready to rail this thing, but given the extreme quality of my submission I expect to have to go to bed before it's revealed.

Yo Gad, you're from Oregon, right? Ever been to the Oregon Brewers Festival? Heading there this summer and I seem to recall you recommending some Oregon beers a long while ago.

So, who managed to submit a track off one of my favourite albums of this decade and still only come 14th?

El_Timon with Outer Space by John Grant (link)

Total points: 15

Kinda pains me to put John Grant this low, but I've always thought this was one of the weakest tracks off Queen of Denmark (which I found out about for the first time in my first walrus on here, cheers whoever it was who submitted that). Almost any other song off that album would be Top 10 at minimum, but this one just doesn't quite grab me as much as the rest of it. Srsly though, if people haven't heard it before, go listen to Queen of Denmark or It's Easier or just the whole album really.

Man, this is a really nice song and does not deserve to be this low. Pretty much everything left at this point is something I really like, the kind of thing you'd go 'oh, nice', if it came on the radio. I think I have a fairly clear Top 4 at the moment, but everything between here and 5th is so so close.

Yeah this is really really nice, the worst I can say is that the lyrics veer a little bit into high school poetry at times, but I can forgive that given the kid looks about 14. This deserves to be a proper summer hit, I can imagine this being great at a festival or something.

yes to being from Oregon, no to having been to the Oregon Brewers Festival

the overall level of craft beer quality is so high that it's sort of hard to go wrong with your preferred style

my two favorite (large-ish) breweries for overall quality across their beers are Deschutes and Ninkasi -- i'm not familiar with the stuff they have on offer at the brewfest, but I'm sure it'll be good (and if you search out Deschutes Black Butte Porter and Ninkasi Total Domination, you will be quite happy)

other names on that list that I recognize as being quite well regarded are:

Base Camp
Boneyard
Caldera (Ashland Amber is really good for when you go to Nong's Khao Man Gai, and you MUST go to Nong's)
Cascade
Full Sail (Session Black is one of the most enjoyable sessions out there)
Green Flash
Laurelwood
McMenamins (quite partial to the Blackwatch Cream Porter, which isn't on that list)
Rogue (good ol' standby)

you're gonna have a great time; I'm super-envious. let me know if you want me to send you the thing I put together for benneh last year with a bunch of food/bar recommendations

hint: you should want me to send it to you

Everything from the 'we don't care' bit through to the end of the chorus is just excellent. Somehow this wasn't even the catchiest song submitted to this category, that's still to come.

I knew Let's Fall Back In Love by Slow Club, which I liked a bit but not enough to seek more stuff out. This is a much better song, I really like the fact that they manage to incorporate quite a lot of little tempo and volume changes into the song which really keep it interesting for the whole length.

This definitely did far better than the alternative submissions that she was apparently considering would have (tracks by the Killers and the Arctic Monkeys).

This is super Bon Ivery, which is pretty OK because I like Bon Iver, and there is a good bit more to this song than some of the other impersonators who just think you can warble whatever in a falsetto with a folky accompaniment. I really like the repeated 'I was only falling in love', and there's a fantastic build towards the end.

I love Slow Club and possibly submitted them later. Makes being 3rd last even more crushing.

Gadarene with You! Me! Dancing! by Los Campesinos (link)

Spoiler:
Total points: 26

Los Campesinos were pretty much THE artist of my university years. I've got the zine they wrote, I've got the limited edition big box release of their second album, I've got a few of their singles on vinyl despite not having a record player, and this was the song that got me into them in the first place. And because I've listened to it just so much it's really hard for me to get quite as excited about it as some of the new stuff that really is very good, even though that's hardly Gad's fault at all. This first album gets just such a brilliant balance between 'everything is ****' and 'oh **** it let's have fun anyway', whereas their later albums seemed to chart a path further and further into depression.
