Telcontar with Megamix by Dan Stone

To be honest I feel pretty much the same with this song as with the one in the last category. Quite pleasant to listen to in the background, and that may even be underselling it a bit. I feel like it'd be an awesome track in Crypt of the Necrodancer or something too. I think my favourite mix was the last one.

Yeah, and I think it's definitely done on purpose. It's really meant to torture you. And then I think whether you like it or not depends on if it all clicks or not.

Crossnerd with Surrender by Natalie Taylor

I find this to be nice enough, I think her voice floats on top of the track quite nicely and imo the instrumentation does help to accentuate the vocal qualities I assume she's aiming for. Overall I...don't know, it just isn't doing enough for me, but I'm not sure how to describe it. I think it may be that it takes a while to build up and for me the climax doesn't really do it justice.

Yeah, comparing some of these songs is like apples to oranges, which is awesome. I was definitely a little worried that I'd just get 20 acoustic indie tracks or something :P

Jabonator with Rory by Foxing

Like a few songs in this area, I think it had some very strong sections, but also some weaker ones that hurt it. It actually climbed a few spots at the last minute, and whether it climbs further over time probably depends on how I end up feeling about the first 90 seconds, where everything is still building up. Once more instrumentation is added I think the extra atmosphere really helps the song, and the distorted guitar that kicks in after that is really great. But until then I find it lacking something.

Fnord_too with Ponta de Lança Africano (Umbabarauma) by Jorge Ben

The first minute or so is so great. The bass in particular stands out to me, but really it's all good. The call/response of the vocals match the layered phrases of the instruments really nicely. After that I feel it gets maybe a tiny bit stale, especially the last minute or so. It feels weird telling songs how much longer/shorter they should be, I'm sure this isn't how I used to judge music, but I really feel like if it was a bit shorter it'd be quite a bit higher.

Vginaman with Virginia Plain by Roxy Music

This was quite a fun listen. It's pretty much constantly driving forward, and there are so many fun quirks throughout. What I think might be a tin whistle playing a melody, trombones backing up guitars, and just all sorts of other things all going on. It has this circusy feeling to it and it's really a song that's just dancing to its own tune throughout, and it's a tune I enjoyed.

No Lynches with Remorse by Scattle

There's a lot to like about this track. It's incredibly laid back, but has plenty that draws your attention/focus too. A pretty simple backbeat, but it doesn't really get old, and gives all the other little melodies and hooks quite a bit of room. I suppose my one issue would be, similar to Telc's entry, just how entranced I would be focusing solely on it, but I think it's definitely possible I would be. If I hear more stuff like this in the next category I'd be a pretty happy camper I think.

72off with Thieves by Ministry

In terms of songs I came in expecting to hate, this one might take the cake, so Henrik, good work. It really defied expectations, well, I mean, not really, it's pretty much exactly what you'd expect, but I liked it way more than I thought I would. The fast pace really lends itself well to the style, of course, and at no point did I get sick of the sound of the drill, which is an amazing accomplishment.

I wouldn't really classify myself as 'sort by loud guitar' guy, but here we are :P This song has so much energy, it's great. I feel like it sounds a lot like another band, but given my exposure to rap-metal isn't particularly extensive, I can't think of what it could be. And no, not Rage Against The Machine :P

DonkDonkDonkDonk with Fhir a Bhata by Sandy Denny

Wow, so this song has been on a journey over the last few hours. When I first started reranking it was in the teens somewhere. And like the fighter it is, it just kept climbing. This is a really nice piece of folksy singing, and I think what made it all click for me was just slowing down for a second and taking a moment to really appreciate it and let all the pieces come together. Her voice is one that captures the imagination, and I think works very well in tandem with the solitary acoustic guitar.

I feel like I have quite a bit more to say about this piece, but I'm not sure how to convey it. At first I was reminded of Joni Mitchell, and then later, with the way she uses her voice, of Joanna Newsom actually (which more than anything else probably shows how unfamiliar I am with the genre in general). I think overall it's quite a captivating performance, and it definitely has me interested in hearing more of her.

TBobLP with Won't Turn Back by Sam Amidon

Sorry, this just didn't do much for me. I think it's the voice. I really don't have the ear to comment with any authority, but it sounds to me like there are a few notes he's just not hitting the way he's "supposed to". And that may be a stylistic touch given the warble he sometimes seems to employ, but it doesn't really work for me. I also think it gets a little monotone-y from time to time. I did really like the segment at about 2 minutes in when the electric guitar jumps in and gives a really laid back solo.
