Playing HU vs friend who knows your ranges

I sometimes play live HU again a good friend of mine, we know each other the best. He knows how I play, I know how he plays.

The way the cards fall determine who wins. But after losing a few BI's vs him, I need to adjust a bit, because he knows what type of hands I play in what way, and knows my general ranges.

It's far from standard poker we play, sometimes there is a 80BB pot with A high the best hand at showdown.

My question is, how do you adjust to someone who know your betting paterns and ranges so well?

It's not easy to just play diffrent type of hands and bet them differently.

tighten up a bit and play less spewy, play more 'standard' poker for periods of time (bluff less/value bet more thinly)

find ways to take more creative lines with hands, try think of ways which u can mix up your play from the norm (which your friend seems to know quite well)

need to have a lot more info on your game to give a more specific answer

Re: Playing HU vs friend who knows your ranges

Take 30 minutes today to think of your most common lines with

A. Monster hands
B. Strong hands
C. Value hands
D. Thin value hands
E. Big draws
F. Weak draws
G. Air

Take the time to consciously come to your best conclusion as to how your friend perceives these lines in relation to their actual meaning, now make minor changes that still let you play the hand profitably. If that doesn't make sense I'll come back and elaborate but essentially what you need to do is either get a level ahead of your friends thinking or make subtle changes to your most common lines that will lead him to believe you have something else.

You could change your ranges...

Re: Playing HU vs friend who knows your ranges

I play against a friend in this way too. We play very often and i am still trying to come up w a strategy and adjustments to his common adjustments to win regularly. We are pretty back and forth which is pretty tilting considering he doesn't play as often as i do or anything. He is just very good at adjusting to whatever i throw at him. With us, it is whoever gets frustrated that loses. We keep it together most of the time but if he/I gets stuck 2-3BIs then i may be able to catch him slipping. Maybe we should try to think of ways to frustrate our opponents deeply. Well, constantly winning would probably do the trick.
