Playing 3 bet pots postflop

Been running into alot of trouble lately playing 3 bet pots postflop. It seems like a random tossup at times because when OOP against a player who flats semi-wide, ill have two overs and completely miss the flop, or when IP, the BB c-bets, forcing me to either raise or float more than i want to.
-What are some of the guidelines to better playing these spots against players, especially readless?
- How will i know if im playing close to "correct"?
- Can a player really have any advantage playing OOP when against a decent player?
