I've tried tightening up my opening range drastically (going from 90% to 50%) but even then, I still whiff most flops and can't handle the barrels.
Should I start 4-betting lighter? Should my 4bets be polarized (AQ+, TT+ and air?)
I used to think I should just call with strong hands like KQ and AJ to keep his range wide and get lots of value when I pair, but I find I lose to much money on flops I miss.
Should I be opening for 2 BB? in addition to / instead of tightening up?
New to HU, appreciate thoughts.
In terms of figuring out a 4bet range it all depends on how he reacts to your 4bets. If he's either 5betting or folding then yes you need to polarize your range. If he's flatting your 4bets a lot (this will happen more often when deep, although the same applies 100bb deep too) then you need to merge your range for value with hands like AJ, KQ, 99, KJs, etc depending on just how wide he's flatting you. If he's a complete maniac that's 3betting 40% and calling 70% of 4bets then you even need to start 4betting hands like KT for value. It all depends on how wide his calling range is which is basically 3bet% * call 4bet%.
